The Les Cabinotiers Westminster Sonnerie—Tribute to Johannes Vermeer pocket watch is equipped with a new in-house movement

A stunningly complex pocket watch inspired by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s Girl With A Pearl Earring has been unveiled by Vacheron Constantin.

Completed around 1665, Girl With A Pearl Earring is one of the oil painter's most famous artworks. Vermeer produced only 36 known artworks in his lifetime and mostly depicted scenes of ordinary life, which was later termed "genre" painting.

Fast forward to today, and Vacheron Constantin’s talented craftsmen have received a commission to create a bespoke single-piece pocket watch inspired by the well-known painting.

According to the watchmaker, Les Cabinotiers Westminster Sonnerie—Tribute to Johannes Vermeer has been in the works since 2013.

It houses the brand's new in-house movement Calibre 3761, which powers a grande et petite sonnerie, minute repeater, tourbillon regulator and Westminster chimes. When activated, the timepiece strikes the hours and quarters every quarter and, as a minute repeater, can also strike the time on demand.

Les Cabinotiers Westminster Sonnerie—Tribute to Johannes Vermeer is hand-engraved on its bezel, back and sides, and is topped by a bow adorned with two hand-sculpted lion heads.

The yellow-gold case back is elegantly enhanced by a reproduction of Girl with a Pearl Earring, which took over two years to complete by one of the world's most famous practitioners of enamel miniature painting, Anita Porchet.
