The final series of the UFO—Unidentified Floating Object—is dedicated to Ulysse Nardin's retail partners

Inspired by the marine chronometer, the Ulysse Nardin UFO clock is a collaboration with Swiss watchmaking specialist L’Épée. The oval time instrument has a rounded aluminium base containing a tungsten mass that allows the clock to sway back and forth without toppling over. The first production of 75 pieces in 2021 came in a dark blue shade. Later the same year, a unique piece in orange was created for Only Watch, which sold for CHF380,000 (about RM1.9 million).

This year, Ulysse Nardin has released the final UFO series consisting of three limited editions for its retail partners, namely The Hour Glass in Southeast Asia, Yoshida in Japan, and Bucherer in Switzerland. Limited to 30 pieces each, The Hour Glass version is distinguished by its champagne accents.

The UFO is shaped like a nautical buoy with a glass dome handblown in Neuchâtel, a process that demands exceptional dexterity to meet the required quality and dimensions of 25cm in height, 15cm in diameter and 3mm in thickness.

Through the glass dome, one can view the 675 components that make up the movement, including the 49mm balance wheel and six oversized barrels that can store up to a year of power. A low frequency of 0.5Hz also allows it to conserve energy.

A key is provided to wind the clock—40 turns to restore to full power—as well as set the time zones on the three trapezoidal dials. The clock operates with a deadbeat seconds mechanism.
