Cover The RM 33-03 Automatic is a refined fusion of elegance, technology and ergonomic excellence, exemplifying the craftsmanship behind its creation

“Like every creation in the Richard Mille collection, the RM 33-03’s blend of elegance, technicality and ergonomics is testament to the meticulousness of its craftsmanship,” shares Cécile Guenat, Richard Mille’s Director of Innovation and Development.

Richard Mille has officially unveiled the RM 33-03 Automatic, a dynamic showcase of the brand’s continued evolution and its ability to craft round-dialled automatics while remaining true to its signature technical and visual language. As the successor to the RM 33-02, this latest edition elevates design complexity while preserving the ergonomic appeal of the previous generation. Here, the bold, athletic lines of a tonneau case converge seamlessly with the poised symmetry of a round dial.

Precise in every movement

At the heart of the RM 33-03 Automatic lies the RMXP3 skeleton automatic calibre, measuring just 3.28 mm thick thanks to its monobloc, off-centre micro-rotor in platinum. Mounted on ceramic ball bearings, the rotor enables bi-directional winding, maximising energy efficiency without increasing the movement’s size. The baseplate, made from grade 5 titanium, is treated with Titalyt®, an electro-plasma oxidation technique that enhances both hardness and durability.

The bridges are also crafted from titanium and coated entirely in black PVD. This combination of materials and finishes lends the calibre its formidable rigidity and guarantees the perfectly flat surfaces necessary for precise gear train function. Achieving such structural finesse requires immense skill, as the ultra-thin components can easily warp under mechanical strain or fluctuate with temperature during machining and finishing.

Encircling the movement is a black PVD-coated titanium date ring. The semi-instantaneous date display rests above a white background at 5 o’clock. Meanwhile, an uncommon feature on Richard Mille timepieces, the small seconds display, sits subtly at 6 o’clock, adding a traditional flourish and a delicate rhythm to the dial.

Powering these intricate functions is a variable inertia oscillator running at 3Hz. Four fine-adjustment weights along the balance wheel allow precision tuning without altering the hairspring’s length. This advanced regulator exemplifies high horology, enabling accurate control over the energy released from the fast-winding mainspring, and offering a power reserve of over 40 hours.

True to form, the RM 33-03 showcases traditional Haute Horlogerie finishes of sandblasting, microblasting, satin brushing and bevelling carried out by hand. “The idea is to highlight the shapes of the movement,” explains Cécile Guenat. “At the same time, the negative space and openwork enhance the interplay of light and shadow.”

Adding depth to the three-dimensional architecture, the 18K 5N red gold numerals are affixed to titanium rails, suspended between the chapter ring and the movement itself. This multi-level construction is not only technically remarkable for its slimness, but also highly functional, drawing the gaze naturally toward the small seconds display.

True luxury

The RM 33-03 Automatic builds on the aesthetic DNA of its predecessor. Signature materials such as grade 5 titanium and Carbon TPT® contribute significantly to its identity, each known for its lightness, durability and distinctive look.

Whether in Carbon TPT® or titanium, the case reveals sleek, sporty contours that combine the sculptural curve of a tonneau form with the precision of a round watch. Its three-part construction is secured by Richard Mille’s hallmark titanium screws and finished with a contrast of matte textures and polished surfaces.

Measuring 41.7 mm across and just 9.7 mm thick, the case is remarkably compact, ideal for all wrist sizes. Combined with its feather-light weight, it all but disappears when worn.

The strap continues the aesthetic line running from 6 to 12 o’clock, creating a sense of visual momentum. These “vanishing” contours enhance the energy of the design, while the grade 5 titanium folding clasp offers both a snug fit and security.

As always with Richard Mille, this timepiece is a study in modern luxury, combining technical innovation with a refined visual sensibility.
