Parmigiani Fleurier’s latest additions to its beloved Tonda PF collection prove once again that the Swiss brand is the pinnacle of refined sophistication in the world of watchmaking

At this year’s Watches and Wonders, the world’s largest luxury watch trade fair, a lot of buzz surrounded the extremely technical watches with grand complications. But among the members of the media and industry who were able to see and handle the many novelties presented at the event held in Geneva, Switzerland, firm favourites seemed to be the more understated and breathtakingly elegant showings of Parmigiani Fleurier that stay true to the signature design spirit of the brand that collectors know and love.

The Swiss brand extended its successful Tonda PF Micro‑Rotor line with a new no‑date model for an even more minimal look; reintroduced the Toric collection with three new watches; and unveiled fresh Tonda PF timepieces to love. Among the launches, one of the novelties that pointedly speaks to Parmigiani Fleurier’s distinctive design language of refinement and impeccable craftsmanship is the new Tonda PF Skeleton Platinum with a Milano Blue dial. Openworked dials tend to have a very complex and almost complicated aesthetic, but this watch possesses the Parmigiani Fleurier flair that redefines the traditional art of skeletonisation, keeping the dial looking uncluttered, well‑proportioned and highly legible.

More precious than its predecessors, which came in either steel or rose gold, the new Tonda PF Skeleton boasts a 40 mm case in polished and satin‑finished 950 platinum that comes crowned with Parmigiani Fleurier’s signature knurled bezel. Within it sits the most alluring feature of the watch: its openworked movement, the PF777 self‑winding calibre. The experts at Parmigiani Fleurier have managed to strike a delicate balance of materials and transparencies here by opening up the movement as much as possible, allowing an unobstructed view into the heart of the mechanism while maintaining structural integrity. The delicate latticework, hand‑bevelled by the brand’s skilled artisans, draws the observer’s eye to the mesmerising inner workings of the PF777 calibre.

Providing a stunning contrast to the lustrous platinum case and bracelet are the Milano Blue sandblasted and satin‑finished surfaces of the skeletonised movement. With sharp, hand‑polished angles, the movement catches the light beautifully and in a way that allows the dial to be easily read via the suspended hour markers and openworked hands. The result is a timepiece that manages to combine complexity and minimalism in a way that looks effortless and refined, making it an exceptional addition to any connoisseur’s collection.

At Watches and Wonders 2024, Parmigiani Fleurier also presented a preview of three new variants of the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph, in colours inspired by the serene beauty of nature: Milano Blue, Arctic Grey and London Grey—all soft, pastel hues. These were later launched at the end of May. “Each piece is crafted to bring a touch of elegance to life’s carefree moments, embodying a minimalist luxury that speaks to both form and function. [It] marries horological precision with a refined, sporty aesthetic, designed for those who find beauty in simplicity and sophistication in sportive elegance,” said Guido Terreni, CEO of Parmigiani Fleurier.

The brand’s Tonda PF collection has so far achieved the paragon of a chic sports watch even with the addition of a chronograph function, which tends to make timepieces look even sportier. One of the significant features that lends a sophistication to the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph is the exquisite guilloché dial, adorned with a fine clou triangulaire pattern. Comprising tiny, intricate triangles, this dial design allows light to dance across its surface in a mesmerising way. The colour of the timer flange and counters are also perfectly matched, and enhanced by the watch’s integrated strap in the same hue. While the strap is made of rubber, as is typical of sports watches, it has a textured finish that has been meticulously crafted to resemble the seams found in high‑quality leatherwork, in line with the brand’s sartorial style and showcasing an unparalleled attention to detail.

Beyond its striking appearance, the Tonda PF Sport Chronograph is a marvel of horological engineering. It houses the COSC‑certified PF070 calibre, a high‑frequency (5 Hz) manufacture movement with an integrated chronograph, and promises a 65‑hour power reserve, making it ideal for travel and daily wear. The skeletonised oscillating weight in 22k rose gold, inspired by the steering wheel of the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO, adds a touch of automotive heritage and sophistication.
