Discover how Moritz Grossmann’s dedication to traditional techniques and modern ingenuity is captivating connoisseurs worldwide
In the realm of haute horlogerie, Moritz Grossmann stands as a beacon of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design. Founded by its CEO, Christine Hutter, the brand pays homage to its namesake—Moritz Grossmann, a 19th-century luminary in watchmaking and the author of the seminal text, The Construction of a Simple but Mechanically Perfect Watch. This guiding philosophy lies at the very heart of Moritz Grossmann’s ethos.
Hutter’s journey with Moritz Grossmann began with a mission: to revive the illustrious heritage of a name that had once been a cornerstone of German watchmaking. “We really wanted to go back to show the heritage of the pocket watch of Moritz Grossmann,” she shares. “If you see our movements, a lot of points are drawn from pocket watches,” Hutter adds.
This commitment to heritage is evident in their designs, which are mostly derived from classic inspirations but occasionally venture into the realm of the avant-garde, demonstrating a brand that respects its roots while embracing modernity.

At the heart of Moritz Grossmann’s philosophy is a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship and an unwavering respect for tradition. This ethos is evident in their approach to watch design and manufacturing. As Hutter elaborates, “We produce 90 per cent of our movements completely in-house, adhering to traditional hand-finishing techniques. Each component is carefully crafted and finished by hand.”
This meticulous attention to detail is not just a choice but a conscious decision that sets Moritz Grossmann apart in a crowded luxury market. “It’s crucial for us to do everything by hand,” Hutter emphasises. “From movement construction to prototyping and dial production, every aspect of our watches is handled in-house, embodying the essence of a true manufactory.”

The balance between tradition and innovation is a delicate dance, one that Moritz Grossmann performs with exceptional grace. Hutter recounts the guiding philosophy of the brand’s founder, “Grossmann wrote about creating ‘a simple but mechanically perfect watch.’ This principle still guides us today.” She elaborates on the design process which emphasises a collaborative nature, bringing together its construction team, designers, and even the salespeople, who contribute insights from their interactions with customers worldwide.

One of the crown jewels of this philosophy is the Hamatic, a modern wristwatch that revives the hammer winding mechanism from the 18th-century pocket watches. “The design of the Hamatic features a hammer winding mechanism that was first created in a pocket watch in the 18th century, and we incorporate it into a modern wristwatch. We discussed and said okay, for this piece, we have to choose a classic design, going back to the pocket watch with Roman numbers to very slim hands,” Hutter explains.
Another remarkable innovation is the Tremblage Tourbillon, which introduces a unique personal touch by incorporating human hair into the movement. “It’s the first time anyone has used hair in a watch movement,” Hutter notes. “This allows for a deeply personal connection, as customers can choose to include their own hair or that of someone special.”

But who is the Moritz Grossmann wearer? According to Hutter, they are connoisseurs who appreciate the nuances of fine craftsmanship. “Our customers value the intricate details and innovative features of our watches,” she says. “We have over 20 patents, including a quick-winder system in the ladies’ Twist watch. With six winds, the watch is fully wound. So if somebody has freshly painted nails, they can easily wind the watch,” Hutter mentions.

Despite challenges, including starting from scratch and building a new manufacturing facility, Hutter is most proud of her team. “If you ever come to our manufactory, visitors often say our team is very proud and passionate about the work.”
This passion is evident in collaborations like Moritz Grossmann HAMATIC Astral Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition, a limited 10-piece series. For Hutter, Sincere Fine Watches is one of their most important retailers in Asia Pacific, as it understands the brand’s quality and mechanics, making them ideal partners. “We are proud that we could do it (the collaboration). Discussions started a year and a half ago. We brainstormed a lot and decided on the movements, materials and the dial, which was really special and fantastic,” Hutter says.

In recent years, there has been a notable shift in the luxury watch market, with a growing interest in independent watchmakers and unique, limited-edition pieces. “The landscape is changing,” Hutter observes. “Collectors are seeking out distinctive pieces from independent brands like ours. This trend aligns perfectly with our approach, offering bespoke timepieces that cater to discerning tastes.”
Looking ahead, Moritz Grossmann is poised to continue its journey of innovation and excellence. With new movements in development and exciting releases planned for the coming years, the brand is set to captivate watch enthusiasts worldwide. “Our focus remains on pushing the boundaries of watchmaking while staying true to our heritage,” Hutter concludes.
