Armed with an evolutionary focus on redefining what it means to be a woman and fashion designer from Asia, Lisa Von Tang shows how small steps can make significant impact

How many Asian, let alone Singaporean or Singapore-based, designers can say they’ve shown at Milan Fashion Week, four times? When it comes to flying our flag on that particular international stage, there’s just one—Lisa Von Tang, also known as Lisa Crosswhite.

Having been based here for over 15 years, it was in 2017 that Crosswhite launched her eponymous label inspired by the clothes she had previously crafted for herself and her friends with a unique aesthetic that was unapologetically Asian—like camo-print bomber jackets with pankou knots, or Chinese “frog” fastenings you’d find on the mandarin collar of qipaos.

Since then the Lisa Von Tang brand has burgeoned through several eras—a reflection of her own evolution as a designer—and a woman. “The brand is an expression of my spirit. It’s all about contrasts: East meets West, yin and yang, sensual and strong, masculine and feminine. Divinity lies in the balance, and I can say I’ve lived several lives in search of that—and I’m still growing, but am also in a beautiful place now,” the Chinese-German muses.

A Class in Contrasts

“Energetically, I’m very masculine and feminine. I enjoy giving direction and taking action, am regimented and have clear leadership. But I’m also all about inspiration, softening to let in different energies and to enjoy the pleasures of life—like melting into kinship with dear friends is essential,” she adds.

Crosswhite’s designs are just as diverse as her background—and her spirit. Growing up in Canada, then Singapore, she was immersed in a rich tapestry of cultural influences. This multicultural environment ignited her passion for traditional craftsmanship and Asian textiles, first revealed when she launched her brand as Chi Chi Von Tang at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, before rebranding to her eponymous label and showing for the first time at New York fashion week in 2022, where she presented her “Dare to Die” fall-winter collection. This debut collection set the tone for her on the global stage. Channelling the phoenix and its cycles through death and rebirth, the collection depicts a femme fatale’s dances through fire—life’s trials and tribulations—similar to how both Crosswhite and her brand have embraced many different lives over the years.

Today, Lisa Von Tang’s Asian influence has become more aesthetically discreet but no less distinct, celebrated in subtle details in the very fabric her designs are crafted in, such as organic Javanese cotton coloured with Balinese natural dye. She has also forged a focused aesthetic, one that lives alongside the contrasts of her own path—from collections that focus on modern red carpet- and wedding-worthy evening wear, to an LVT line that zooms in on premium basics spanning sportswear, swimwear, luxurious knitwear and cashmeres, and the classic white tee.

“This upcoming fall-winter season, and specifically for the fashion weeks, I’ve massively distilled down to super high evening wear; think sweeping silk dresses, gowns and bridal pieces. LVT on the other hand, is decidedly designed and positioned to be more accessible focusing on athleisure and breezy classics, which is available now at our new home in New Bahru,” she expresses.

There are two key threads that string through all of her lines, however. First, is her dedication to “modernity, sensuality and sophistication”, and second, her compassion for giving back to the earth through a sustainable design ethos. She’s done entire collections, including slinky knitwear pieces, thoughtfully made out of recycled nylon and natural fibres, all crafted in a solar-powered factory; and consistently uses eco-friendly materials like hemp or upcycled fabrics sourced from all parts of the world. “For the new LVT line, we’re using recycled nylon and polyester and biodegradable synthetic fibres. It is a challenge sourcing for these, but it’s an even greater challenge to produce because it costs more, but the general consumer isn’t exactly willing to pay more—unless they’re equally conscious and aware of the importance of a circular economy, even in fashion. But we do what we need to do to find that balance between delivering premium quality and accessibility. It’s all in the little things—small steps that can make a big impact,” Crosswhite affirms.

Mini But Mighty

“Just take a look at fighting fish—they may be small, but hold such immense beauty and power,” adds the fashion designer-entrepreneur. Crosswhite’s mini-but-mighty musings reflect how she seeks to shift perspectives through style, sustainability and a divine, resilient spirit, which extend to her personal choices, both in life and sartorially, down to jewellery and watches. “I first fell in love with Audemars Piguet’s iconic design language—its bold shapes that are streamlined but come with extreme attention to detail, with complex movements housed in both traditional and innovative materials’’, she explains, “and the new Royal Oak Mini is yet another exemplification of this, with a distinctly feminine impact.”

Born from a “mini but mighty” dream, the Royal Oak Mini is a tribute to the smallest Royal Oak ever produced in 1997. A feat of both design and technical miniaturisation that showcases Audemars Piguet’s watchmaking expertise, the Royal Mini Oak presents the iconic octagonal bezel in 23mm, featuring exposed screws and a Petite Tapisserie dial. It comes in 18-carat pink, white and yellow Frosted Gold, a finishing inspired by an ancient jewellery technique that allows the watches to scintillate like diamonds from every angle. These stellar timepieces fuse power and precision with statement-making presence—just how she likes it.
