The Creatives | The fashion designer is constantly pushing boundaries at her namesake brand, marrying sustainability with Asian influence
Born and raised in Canada, Chinese German fashion designer Lisa Von Tang started modelling in Hong Kong as a teenager before moving to Singapore, where she has been based for the past 15 years. “You feel at home in so many different cities, and with so many different cultures, but in a way, you don’t belong to one—and a ‘third culture’ situation emerges,” says Von Tang. This so intrigued her that she brought some aspects of her heritage and her travels across Asia into her eponymous label, which was founded in 2017, while also embracing sustainable practices and artisanship. “The brand is an expression of my spirit,” she shares. “There are Asian elements and it’s modernised, very East‐meets‐West, and it’s sensual and strong.” Case in point: the Lisa Von Tang autumn‐winter 2023 collection titled Earth Priestess, which was shown at New York Fashion Week this year. A tribute to the power of femininity, the collection features dyes and fabrics sourced from around the world, from Balinese natural dye to Italian crochet and merino knitwear, Shibari accents, silk velvet and organic Javanese cotton. On a designer who inspires her, Von Tang says: “Miuccia Prada has forever maintained this ideal of a woman, one who’s very intelligent, a bit eccentric, and sexy in her own way— but not for the male gaze—and this is super cool.”
