With the new RM 55‑01 Manual Winding, Richard Mille strips haute horlogerie down to its most essential form
There is a quote adapted from French writer Antoine de Saint‑Exupéry that Richard Mille has chosen as the guiding principle for its new RM 55‑01 Manual Winding: “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” It is a statement that cuts against the grain of how complicated watchmaking is usually understood, for the conversation in haute horlogerie tends to accumulate—more complications, more finishing, more visible evidence of effort. The RM 55‑01, though, moves in the opposite direction.
This timepiece is, in the most considered sense of the word, minimal. Not in the way that a plain white dial can be called minimal, but in the way that a suspension bridge is minimal—every element doing precisely what it must, with nothing present that cannot justify its place in the structure.
That ethos is evident in the new Calibre RMUL4, a manually wound skeletonised movement that weighs under 5g—roughly the weight of a teaspoon of water. Achieving this feat requires not just the right material choices, but also a fundamental rethinking of what a movement needs in order to function.

The decision to use manual winding rather than automatic is itself an act of restraint. An oscillating weight—the rotor that winds an automatic movement with the motion of the wearer’s wrist—adds mass and components, and, crucially, obstructs one’s view of the movement through the dial. Remove it and light passes freely through the calibre, allowing the architecture to become visible in a way that no automatic can quite match.
The baseplate and bridges, meanwhile, are machined from the grade 5 titanium used in aerospace applications. To optimise visual depth, the skeletonised baseplate is microblasted, sanded and finished with a black PVD coating. Milling the alloy is, according to Richard Mille, a demanding process; its extreme hardness places considerable strain on tooling and the brand’s quality tolerances leave little room for error.
Tasked with securing the going train, the three bridges are treated with Titalyt—a proprietary electroplasma surface treatment that enhances both structural hardness and aesthetics.

Beneath this titanium framework, energy storage is handled by a double‑barrel system distributing the stored power across two barrels rather than one. The practical benefit is torque stability: the movement delivers more consistent energy to the escapement across its approximately 55‑hour power reserve, reducing friction on bearings and pivots in the process. At the escapement, a free‑sprung balance with variable inertia beats at 4Hz. In place of the traditional regulator index, four small adjustable weights sit directly on the balance wheel, allowing for more precise and repeatable regulation while making the assembly less vulnerable to shock.
At 10.75mm thick, the case measures 37.95mm by 47.33mm—conservative dimensions for Richard Mille, which has never been a brand known for subtlety when it comes to case size. Here, the proportions serve the philosophy: a watch built around lightness should not announce itself too loudly on the wrist.

The RM 55‑01 is available in three versions, each defined by its bezel material: Carbon TPT, white Quartz TPT and grey Quartz TPT. These technical composites were developed specifically for Richard Mille, and produced by layering and compressing filaments under heat and pressure, creating the distinctive damascene pattern that has become one of the brand’s signatures. Beyond their visual character, both materials offer genuine functional advantages such as excellent resistance to shock and abrasion, and a contribution to the overall reduction in weight.
The four‑part flange that frames the movement weaves together titanium, carbon fibre and steel to form a layered composition that adds texture and visual depth without piling on unnecessary mass. On the wrist, the RM 55‑01 is light enough that its presence registers more as sensation than weight. The movement, visible through both sapphire crystals, offers the particular satisfaction of mechanics laid completely bare—nothing hidden, nothing superfluous, nothing left to take away.
