In celebration of the iconic model's 50th anniversary, the Swiss watchmaker has teamed up with Hong Kong luxury watch platform Wristcheck to launch a global design contest, which offers watch lovers the chance to bring their own vision of the timepiece to life

Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak has been a coveted item for watch collectors since its launch 50 years ago, and now, horology enthusiasts will have the chance to design—and potentially bring to life—their very own version of the iconic timepiece in a special contest.

Titled Your Take on the Royal Oak, the contest—which launched on October 6 and runs through November 7 (HKT)—is a collaboration between the Swiss luxury watchmaker and Wristcheck, a Hong Kong-based pre-owned luxury watch platform founded by Austen Chu, who has been referred to as “Instagram’s best-known Audemars Piguet collector”.

Participants will submit drawings of their vision of the Royal Oak, with the opportunity to customise colours, materials and complications.

“I’m very excited that Audemars Piguet has now challenged Wristcheck to host this global design competition,” says Chu in a press statement. “It’s every watch enthusiast’s dream to design a watch in their own way, and now, this is their chance.”

Three winners will be chosen by Chu and Audemars Piguet CEO François-Henry Bennahmias. The winners and their plus-ones will receive business class round-trip flights to Le Brassus, Switzerland—the birthplace of the maison—for a two-night stay at the Hôtel des Horlogers, Audemars Piguet’s first luxury hotel; as well as visits to the Audemars Piguet Manufacture, where the brand’s watches are produced, and to Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet, a museum dedicated to the heritage and history of the brand.

The winners will also have the opportunity for a sit-down with Bennahmias and Chu. Depending on the feasibility of the design, the watchmaker could produce the watch.
