God’s Love We Deliver hosted its 18th annual Golden Heart Awards at the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine
Last October, God’s Love We Deliver—New York City’s only nonprofit provider of medically tailored meals and nutrition services for individuals living with severe illness—hosted its 18th annual Golden Heart Awards at the historic Cathedral Church of St John the Divine in Harlem, New York, a grand and spectacular venue chosen by Michael Kors and his team.
As they entered the solemn corridors of this massive church, guests were transported into an out-of-this-world experience. The organisation’s logo, beamed from the ceiling to the floor, led to everyone’s destination: the cocktail party. Four violinists serenaded the guests with classical and modern music a few metres from the altar. The bar area was decorated with stained glass-like material to replicate the venue’s historic designs. Erich Bergen produced and directed the event.

Melba Wilson, the visionary behind Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem and a God’s Love board member, served dishes to attendees. The evening was like attending a church ceremony…Michael Kors style.
Beaming in a silver off-the-shoulder dress from the designer, Kristin Chenoweth began the night with opening remarks. As she always does in her performances on Broadway, she dazzled the audience with her humour and wit.

Next on the podium was God’s Love We Deliver president and CEO David Ludwigson, who welcomed guests and introduced the organisation’s new video featuring the voices and stories of their clients. He also explained the foundation’s growing mission: “Since 1985, God’s Love We Deliver has been cooking and delivering medically tailored meals to individuals living with severe and chronic illness, with the demand for services up to 50 per cent in the last two years. This year, the organisation expanded services for people with sickle disease. This important enhancement to services is in addition to recent innovations by God’s Love, with new programmes for pregnant people with gestational diabetes and our Connected programme for US military veterans living with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) and other diagnoses.”

Co-Chair Kors presented Sarah Jessica Parker with the Michael Kors Award for Outstanding Philanthropy. In her acceptance speech, Parker expressed her dedication and love for the organisation and encouraged all guests to participate and help the cause.
The actor, who played Carrie Bradshaw in the iconic Sex and the City, delighted guests by offering her award to longtime staff member Pat Costello for her 30 years of service.

During Harry Santa-Ollala’s auction, guests bid on programme items, such as vans for delivery, family sponsorship and more, to support God’s Love. Because of his energetic and acrobatic English performance, the event raised US$4 million, including a surprise US$1 million match by Sam and Dena Lombardo.

Another honour was the talented singer Megan Thee Stallion. Desiree Perez of ROC Nations Records presented the artist with the genLOVE Award for Outstanding Philanthropy, honouring her work on behalf of housing, education and health in her hometown, Texas. Stallion quipped that if she could be one of the characters from Sex and The City, she would be Samantha. The humour and laughter reignited the guests.
The last award for the evening went to Cole Escola, best known for bringing Oh, Mary! to Broadway. Actor Chloe Fineman presented him with the Golden Heart Award for Special Achievements in the Arts.

The evening concluded with an exceptional performance by Sam Smith, who brought the house down in a royal blue suit, performing his number one hits Stay with Me, Unholy and Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time.
Other guests included Anna Wintour, Bee Schaffer, Zoey Deutch, Kristin Davis, Nicole Ari Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kaitlyn Dever, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Sai Silva.
