The majestic horse embodies force and grace, a powerful animal with acute perception. As the Year of the Horse begins, it is fitting that Selberan introduces an entirely new collection inspired by the animal, evoking these noble qualities.
Meet Seraphine, Selberan’s new jewellery collection that translates the silhouette of the horse’s head and the simplified Chinese character 马, into elegant pieces of angular shapes and sharp, flowing lines. Like the animal, each piece reflects freedom, strength and a powerful sophistication that makes it an instant classic.
Handcrafted in gold, a couple of the highlights include the Seraphine necklace with pavé diamonds and a gorgeous drape necklace embellished with a pair of pearls. Prefer emeralds? Well, there is the chance to customise your pieces with the gold and precious stones of your choice.

Like all Selberan jewellery, the collection showcases the Malaysian jeweller’s masterful craftsmanship, honouring its European heritage with an Eastern sensibility. Amanda Kuan, general manager of Selberan, tells us more.
How did this collection begin? Is it because of the Year of the Horse?
Not specifically. We wanted a collection that represents power, strength and elegance. The horse seems an apt inspiration—it just so happens that the collection is released around this time.

We didn’t want it to be a full horse design. We wanted a collection that would be timeless. So we looked at the different elements of the horse and decided on the silhouette of its head. At the same time, we were also looking at the Chinese character for the horse. The final result is a combination of the East and West.
We also made sure that it is versatile. I’m wearing the Seraphine earrings with diamonds, but if you’d like to incorporate your birthstone, say aquamarine or sapphire or ruby, we can also do that. It will give the pieces a different look and feel.

How did you come up with the name Seraphine?
Selberan likes to name its collection after a woman’s name, or rather, the type of woman that we envision wearing the jewellery. We felt that the collection should have a name that evokes “divine light and poise”. This means the woman wearing the collection is strong, but she is not loud. These characteristics also reflect the concept of the horse—powerful but not aggressive. The name Seraphine fits the collection well.
How does Seraphine push the Selberan design language forward?
It always comes back to how we make jewellery, and that is that all our jewellery is made by hand. We believe that handcrafted jewellery truly brings the design to life. I’ve been in the jewellery industry for many years and I can differentiate between handcrafted jewellery and machine-made ones—the latter has no soul.

What can we expect from the Seraphine collection in the future?
We already have plans to create bigger pieces, for instance bigger necklaces, as well as a bangle.
