In conversation with Tatler, Mus.za founder Esther Ho shares why the Gems From The Heart fundraising campaign is a deeply personal and worthy social cause

Esther Ho, the visionary founder of Mus.za (Museum of Zenith Affair), has transformed her personal journey into a powerful initiative where luxury and purpose intersect. The aptly themed Gems From The Heart campaign aims to raise SG$300,000 to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

This year marks the atelier’s fifth consecutive fundraising campaign for Dementia Singapore, a cause that resonates deeply with Ho, who served as her mother’s primary caregiver during her battle with dementia.

Ho’s experience caring for her mother revealed the profound impact of patience, care, and love. “The time that I spent with her helped me to understand the values that I truly treasure in my life,” she reflects.

This intimate understanding of dementia’s challenges inspired her to launch Mus.za’s inaugural fundraising campaign in 2020. “I felt a strong desire to do something meaningful in [my mother’s] memory after she had passed in 2019,” Ho continues, “I saw the work that Dementia Singapore does for both patients suffering from dementia and their caregivers, and I decided to help raise funds for the organisation.”

Each year, the fundraising initiative takes a different approach. For the first time, this year’s campaign features a unique collection designed by five guest designers, each a long-time friend of the brand who feels strongly about the cause. “I am incredibly grateful for their unwavering support, and it makes me so thankful that I’ve been able to meet like-minded individuals over the years,” Ho shares.

The lineup includes notable figures such as Christine Yip,  chief designer of Mus.za; Kelly Keak, managing director of mtm labo; homemaker Patricia Kaunang; philanthropist Tai-Heng Cheng; and private investor Wendy Long. Ho emphasises the collaborative spirit: “With each designer coming from a different background, they bring different approaches and perspectives on this year’s theme—coming together to form a collection that is truly one-of-a-kind.”

Launched on October 1, the collection showcases exclusive pieces that reflect the designers’ personalities and stories. Part of the sales proceeds from the special collection will directly benefit Dementia Singapore.

In addition to this collection, Mus.za is hosting sales online where 100 per cent of proceeds will also support the cause. The curated selection of items ranging from jewellery and accessories to luxurious hotel stays ensures that multiple avenues are available for potential donors to support the cause.

A highlight of the fundraising efforts is the Appreciation Charity Gala Night scheduled for November 9. This exclusive event serves as “a heartwarming gathering, a get-together for everyone who contributed to the campaign to feel the warmth of our collective efforts,” Ho enthuses.

Showcasing that her commitment extends beyond fundraising; Ho is nurturing a new generation of advocates through her grandchildren, who have become co-hosts of the event. “They’ve also taken an interest in designing their own jewellery, and will hopefully conduct their own live auctions in the years to come,” she notes with pride.

As Mus.za continues its mission to raise awareness about dementia while offering exquisite bespoke jewellery, Ho remains steadfast in her belief that luxury brands can play a pivotal role in social causes. “Giving back to social causes is about paying it forward—it’s about sharing and supporting one another to uplift society,” she asserts.

With a goal of reaching $1 million raised over five years, Ho’s endeavour exemplifies how personal experiences can inspire impactful change. Through elegance and empathy, Mus.za not only crafts beautiful jewellery but also fosters a community dedicated to supporting those affected by dementia.
