GIOIA Fine Jewellery
Cover The founders of GIOIA Fine Jewellery believe in crafting personalised and modern heirloom jewellery with precious gemstones.

Thanks to its use of fine quality precious stones and meticulous craftsmanship, GIOIA Fine Jewellery has helped to transform its customers’ dreams into reality.

In a departure from tradition, more and more couples are eschewing the brilliance of diamonds for the allure of coloured gemstones for their engagement and wedding rings. This shift means that couples get to choose vibrant stones that express their individuality, as each gem tells a story. Sapphires convey wisdom, rubies embody passion, and emeralds exude timeless elegance, so the rings become unique symbols of love.

At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, which specialises in bespoke jewellery with contemporary designs, co-founder Clarence Yee noticed that sapphires have been trending recently. Interestingly, it’s not necessarily the royal blue sapphires that are generating interest. Clarence’s customers, who are mainly in their 20s and 30s, are asking after just about every shade of sapphire.

“We have enquiries about cornflower blue, pastel blue, or secondary shades of sapphire such as teal (bluish-green) and even colour-change sapphires that go from blue to violet. [There are even customers who ask for] the rarest of all sapphires, the Padparadscha sapphire (orangey-pink),” shared Clarence, who runs the business with his wife, Cheryl Woon.

According to Clarence, another rare gem that has been attracting attention is the Paraíba tourmaline. In fact, one of the most memorable pieces that GIOIA Fine Jewellery designed was a pair of wedding rings set with Paraíba tourmalines. “It was a truly bespoke set of wedding jewellery that spoke about the couple’s love story,” he said. The bride’s wedding band, which had a filigree design, was meant to be worn stacked with her engagement ring.

For couples choosing the right coloured stone to define their relationship and give meaning to the jewellery, Clarence recommends considering the bride’s favourite gem, her birthstone, or another stone that holds special significance to both parties. Here, it’s best to think long-term: The jewellery will ultimately be passed down to future generations as family heirlooms.

The ring design is where personalisation truly shines. Couples can opt for timeless, modern, geometric, floral, filigree or even vintage-inspired Art Deco patterns. For the ultimate statement of personalisation, couples can consider adding elements that resonate with the bride’s preferences, such as her favourite characters or catchphrases, on the side of the centre gem or band.

At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, which Clarence and Cheryl established in 2016, each piece is designed around the centre gem. Once the couple’s requirements and design preferences have been identified, Clarence and his team would propose and sketch design concepts on the spot for better visualisation.

Aside from the exquisite designs, Clarence believes that what sets the company apart is its commitment to using fine quality precious gemstones and unparalleled craftsmanship. Every gemstone is carefully selected, and every piece of jewellery is meticulously crafted with precision and dedication. The results speak for themselves: Satisfied customers who leave glowing reviews on Google.

But with the amount of attention going into the making of each piece, Clarence advises couples to plan well ahead. While the fabrication process typically takes 10 to 12 weeks, more complex designs such as floral patterns could extend the timeline. Sourcing for the right gems could also take time, so a ballpark of six months in advance of the big day is recommended.

After all, the creation of a modern family heirloom should not be rushed.
