A refined counterpart to its museum-calibre Black Label Masterpieces, Cindy Chao’s White Label Collection invites collectors into a more wearable, yet equally expressive, dimension of the brand

Since founding her eponymous brand in 2004, Taiwanese jewellery artist Cindy Chao has redefined the relationship between high jewellery and art. Cindy Chao The Art Jewel has earned global acclaim for its museum-worthy, technically audacious creations—pieces that have been inducted into the permanent collections of esteemed museums such as the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., the United States, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the United Kingdom.

Chao’s distinctive vision is rooted in a remarkable artistic lineage. The granddaughter of a distinguished architect who designed hundreds of temples across Taiwan—many now regarded as cultural monuments—and the daughter of a sculptor, she was raised in an environment where creativity was not only valued, but lived. Under her grandfather’s guidance, she learned to interpret the world architecturally, appreciating the nuance of structure, proportion and space while touring sacred sites. At home, she watched her father bring raw material to life with nothing but his hands and intuition, later becoming his first apprentice in the art of sculpting. Naturally, those early experiences have deeply shaped Chao’s approach to jewellery.

It is this singular fusion of architectural discipline and sculptural fluidity that defines Cindy Chao The Art Jewel and its most ambitious and conceptually profound high jewellery art pieces known as the Black Label Masterpieces. And while these innovative showpieces have long captivated collectors and curators, there is another facet of Chao’s work that offers a more accessible, yet equally compelling, introduction to her world: the White Label Collection.

Crafted with the same level of artistry, technical precision and storytelling, the White Label Collection creations are entirely one-of-a-kind, but designed with greater versatility in mind. These pieces remain deeply expressive and materially rich, yet are conceived to move more fluidly between everyday elegance and special occasion wear. For collectors seeking an entry point into Chao’s artistic universe, they represent a refined balance between exclusivity and wearability.

A sculptural tribute to nature

One of the two thematic pillars of the White Label Collection, the Four Seasons series is a poetic exploration of nature’s constant evolution. From the quiet austerity of winter to the vibrant intensity of summer, each piece captures a specific moment in the seasonal cycle. The brand’s earliest expressions of this theme—such as the 2007 Winter Branch Necklace and Bangle, auctioned in a Christie’s New York sale—marked Chao’s international debut and laid the foundation for a recurring motif in her work: time, transformation and emotional resonance.

Today’s Four Seasons pieces reflect the evolution of her artistry; each design is deeply architectural in form and organic in spirit, capturing nature in motion. The Maple Earrings, for instance, bring maple leaves to life with two 4.54-carat Muzo emeralds set among 654 gemstones in a painterly gradient of yellow diamonds, tsavorites and colour-change garnets. Meanwhile, the Four Seasons Foliage Ring, with its 940 stones in a medley of yellow diamonds, pink sapphires and purple garnets, is a miniature sculpture on the finger that evokes autumn’s richness and sense of transition.

Softness in motion

If the Four Seasons is an ode to the passage of time, then Cindy Chao’s Ribbon Collection is a meditation on movement itself. Inspired by the gentle flutter of fabric, these pieces challenge the physical limitations of jewellery by translating softness and fluidity into the hardness of precious materials.

The Emerald Ribbon Necklace, for example, features a vivid 14.37-carat Colombian emerald at its heart, wrapped in a cascade of more than 2,500 gemstones that seem to curve and ripple with the elegance of silk. Similarly the Ribbon Ring, anchored by two triangle-cut yellow diamonds totalling 20.57 carats, is both sculptural and precious—its arcs and folds creating an interplay of light and shadow that’s constantly in motion.

Elsewhere, the Yellow Diamond Ribbon Earrings exemplify the collection’s visual dynamism, pairing fancy vivid yellow emerald-cut diamonds with pink sapphires, Malaya garnets and diamonds for a silhouette that feels light, even in its complexity. These designs embody Chao’s mastery of visual paradox: creating softness from structure, lightness from density, and movement from stillness.

Whether worn on the red carpet—as seen on Hollywood stars Michelle Yeoh, Matthew McConaughey, and Julia Roberts—or cherished in private, White Label creations resonate with collectors who value jewellery not simply as adornment, but also as art. Each is a singular piece with its own narrative, emotional depth, and artistic language. For those beginning their journey with Cindy Chao The Art Jewel, it offers an intimate invitation into a world where every detail is considered, every curve intentional, and every piece a celebration of the artist’s unique ability to see beyond the surface.
