The August birthstone—believed to ward off evil spirits—is gaining traction with celebrities on the red carpet

Peridots are believed to have been Cleopatra’s favourite gemstone—and today, they’re becoming increasingly popular among red carpet regulars and royals alike.

Here, we take a look at celebrities who’ve sported the “gem of the sun”.

Vogue's global editorial director wore a tiara made of diamonds and peridots in floral and ribbon motifs at the Met Gala in May. According to fashion journalist Laurie Brookins, the vintage diadem is Wintour’s family heirloom, and was made in America in 1910.

At the Met Gala in 2019, the Doctor Strange actor wore an 18-karat yellow gold, peridot, diamond and platinum nosegay brooch from Verdura circa 1965. The jewel caused quite a stir on social media: fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe joked that it was the Time Stone, a precious stone guarded by Doctor Strange.

The Duchess of Cambridge attended the UK premiere of Disneynature’s African Cats in 2012 wearing Kiki McDonough’s double oval peridot, blue topaz, and diamond stud earrings set in 18-karat yellow gold.
