As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do—and for those in the know, there are few things more quintessentially Roman than a summertime trip to the Teatro dell’Opera. As visitors take their seats at the outdoor theatre, the majestic backdrop of the Baths of Caracalla seems to rise out of the darkness, illuminated only by the harsh glare of stage lights. Since its founding in 1884, Bulgari has constantly sought inspiration from its birthplace, the city of Rome. Over the decades, the rich history of the Eternal City has been harnessed and interpreted into fine jewellery at the hands of Bulgari’s skilled artisans, indelibly shaping the house’s identity—just as Bulgari has shaped Rome’s.
In 2015, the Italian jewellery house financed the restoration of the iconic floor mosaics of the western palestra of the Baths of Caracalla, whose fan motif paved the way for the creation of the Divas’ Dream collection. The two-phase project, which began in 2015, saw craftsmen painstakingly replacing individual mosaic tiles in a display of savoir faire not unlike that of Bulgari’s expert gemologists.
Beyond a mere source of inspiration, however, these vibrantly coloured mosaics—composed of grey granite, yellow marble, and green and purple porphyry— represent a priceless facet of Bulgari’s cultural legacy and reflect the house’s enduring bond with the Eternal City.
