Alice Basteguian creates art deco-inspired jewellery from her family's Los Angeles-based manufacture alongside her brother and co-founder, Pierre.

Inspired by pop art, the duo craft demi-fine jewellery under the brand Alice Pierre using 14-karat gold that's bold and beautiful. Here, Basteguian talks to Tatler about her interest in craftsmanship and how creatives have influenced her interest in combining cutting-edge shapes with texture.

What do you love about art deco?

The combination of colours and bold geometry, and the impeccable detail. I particularly love the visual presence of these elements in architecture from the art deco era.

Tell us about your most treasured jewellery piece.

For my sixteenth birthday, my grandmother gifted me one of her rings, which was made by my grandfather. It was made using textured yellow gold and has a turquoise marquee centre stone. It’s absolutely beautiful and has profoundly influenced my obsession with textured jewellery. I always use this ring as inspiration when in need of a creative spark.

What did you learn from 2021?

Personally, I’ve learned that being adaptable doesn’t necessarily mean you should shift your goals but, rather, your perspective on how to get there.

Why is your Disco collection inspired by Roy Lichtenstein’s Sunrise painting?

I have been collecting art books for quite some time, and often look through them for inspiration. Roy Lichtenstein is one of my favourite pop art artists and this piece has always resonated with me. I love his use of strong bold lines, but there’s also a sense of warmth I feel when I look at it, so when I was creating an inspiration board for Disco, Lichtenstein’s Sunrise became important.

How do the art and jewellery worlds collide?

Art is the expression of creativity and imagination, and so is jewellery. I am fascinated by the way art evokes emotion and I love to translate that into my jewellery. I’m humbled by the notion that people can wear the art I create.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be unapologetically yourself and feel good doing it.

What’s your favourite gemstone?

Please don’t make me choose! I love them all.

What do people not know about you?

I have a master’s degree in communication disorders.

What do you hope to achieve in 2022?

My ultimate goal is to be the best version of myself. I hope to reflect on past experiences in order to improve my future self.
