Aston Martin debuted their first SUV, the DBX, this week with a cinematic short film directed by Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino and starring award-winning British actor Josh O’Connor, who most recently took on the role of Prince Charles in the Netflix drama, The Crown.

The film, which was filmed on location in Sicily, features O’Connor going on a drive at the wheel of the Aston Martin DBX. He takes the car on a journey through the island’s vineyards and dirt roads before landing up in an elegant villa.

As with many of his films such as Oscar-nominated Call Me by Your Name and A Bigger Splash, Guadagnino uses vivid imagery in the Aston Martin film to allow the viewer to form their own interpretations with the narrative.

“My films are always a beautiful interaction between me and the talented people I work with,” said Guadagnino. “We shot the film in May, and the DBX’s beautiful Minotaur Green finish created depth and shade against the Sicilian landscape, which I know so well. The DBX was almost like an Anish Kapoor sculpture, where reflections became very important.”

The car, which was designed at Aston Martin’s studio in Gaydon, Warwickshire, is also a true work of art. It was built at the company’s production facility in St Athan, South Wales and combines effortless performance with incredible dynamics and a luxurious interior for a truly spectacular driving experience.

“We are a 108-year-old ultra-luxury brand. This new film conveys what it feels like to be part of Aston Martin and be truly engaged with the spirit and ethos of the company,” said Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s executive vice president and chief creative officer. “Luca Guadagnino doesn’t follow trends. He is a true future thinker and we gave him complete creative freedom.”
