Mercedes-Benz officially introduced its latest S-Class limousine the S580e plug-in hybrid in Malaysia. The seventh-generation sedan is assembled locally and represents the very best the Stuttgart automaker has to offer.

1. Bigger, sleeker and more commanding

There is always this pressure to make every subsequent model better. This time around, Mercedes-Benz has knocked it out of the park with the new S-Class. Though it is slightly larger than its predecessor, the new S580e is actually lighter by up to 60kg due to the use of aluminium in its structure. 
 
It also appears sleeker with new lines and trapezoid headlamps that house LED daytime running lights. The car has this a great visual presence thanks to its much larger grille. On the rear, the two triangular tail lights are connected by a piece of chrome trim, giving it a more streamlined appearance.

2. Entertainment at your fingertips

Mercedes-Benz has made significant changes to the interior of the S580e showcasing a more minimalist designed dashboard. The central focus of the cabin is the massive 12.8-inch Oled portrait display that houses the MBUX multimedia system, it also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is supplemented by a slightly smaller 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that displays all the essential information a driver needs to know. 
 
Of course, this being an S-Class model, the experience for the rear passenger is enhanced with a MBUX entertainment system complete with twin 11-inch displays, complemented by two wireless headset and a 7-inch Android tablet that is housed in the centre armrest. 
 
Sound and music are a big part of the experience and the S580e comes with a Burmester 3D surround system comprised of 16 speakers. No matter what you are listening to, it will sound great in the car.

3. A revamped interior

Mercedes-Benz has spared no expense at redesigning the interior to become a space that you would want to inhabit during your commute. The inclusion of anthracite open-pore poplar wood trim and a central console finished in black crystal lend a sense of class.  
 
Meanwhile, Nappa leather adorns the upholstery and steering wheel. Of course, this being a limousine, the rear seats have extra features. The seats can be electrically adjusted, so you can find the perfect position. It also come with heating and cooling along with a calf massage function. Even the rear headrests come with a built-in neck warmer. 
 
Other amenities in the rear include a panoramic sliding sunroof, wireless charging for select smartphones and a dazzling 64-colour ambient light system that is visible enough to be seen during the day.

4. Safety above all else

When it comes to safety features, the S580e offers a Driving Assistance package that include autonomous emergency braking with an improved cross traffic and pedestrian detection feature. It also comes with adaptive cruise control, that helps prevent collisions at speeds of up to 130km/h, as well as lane keeping assist. 
 
The latest S-Class model comes with up to 14 airbags in total covering the front, front sides, driver knee bag and side curtain. Even rear occupants benefit from front rear airbags and an integrated seat cushion airbag for the executive seats. 
 

5. Geared to go fast

Above Take your pick between using the all-electric drive feature or regular petrol engine, depending on the situation.

Under the hood you will find a M256 3.0 turbocharged engine that offers 362 Horse Power and 500Nm of torque. It is paired with a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox that achieves the century sprint in just 5.2 seconds and is capable of a max speed of 250km/h. 
 
This regular petrol engine is paired with an electric motor that allows the S580e to be driven on full electric power for around 100km and reach speeds of up to 140km/h. It comes with a 11kW onboard charger that should allow the vehicle to charge up to 80 per cent within 2.5 hours on a three-phase AC wall box charger.
