It’s instant fashion gold

Drop everything: The fashion collaboration of the year is here.

In case you’ve been off social media or the news cycle, Ye and Demna (the creatives formerly known as Kanye West and Demna Gvasalia) have absolutely devastated the fashion world with the announcement of their upcoming collection, Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga.

Ye and Demna have long been close collaborators—Demna most recently creative directed Ye’s Donda listening party in Atlanta and Chicago, and Ye regularly shows his support for Demna’s Balenciaga collections; he was last seen sitting in the front row at the designer’s couture debut last July—so it makes perfect sense that they would join forces for a fashion project.

In 2020, Ye signed a 10-year contract with Gap and has sporadically dropped hot potato items, like the viral Round Jacket—released first in a sky blue, then black and red versions as well—and the Yeezy Gap hoodie, which list on resale sites now for up to 10 times their original price. Meanwhile, Demna is fashion design supernova who has all but revived the house of Balenciaga, giving it a modern edge and inimitable cool. For the two to bring their formidable talent together for a collaboration (and at affordable princes, no less) is enough to drive fashion lovers into a frenzy.

“It is a vision come true to work with Gap and Demna, the creative director of Balenciaga, to make incredible product available to everyone at all times,” Ye told Vogue in an interview.

In the same interview, Demna said, “There are very few people that I know, especially of Ye’s caliber, who really understand my work so well. He makes me come out of my comfort zone and be a better designer. There’s no ego when we collaborate, just a mutual drive to evolve and do something great and new.”

So, what can we expect in the collection? Demna’s modus operandi is to elevate everyday essentials into high fashion—it’s something he has done since founding Vetements and he has taken that approach with him to Balenciaga—so Gap will have be a vast resource for him to tap into, with its history of staple pieces such as trusty blue jeans, comfy hoodies and slouchy T-shirts. Ye will undoubtedly bring his forward-thinking aesthetic into the equation, whether it’s offbeat design elements or strangely magnetic graphics.

The pair have already been spotted on set, and the first drop for Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga has been slated for June 2022, with a second one scheduled for later this year. So mark your calendars, it won’t be long before the collections hits stores (and sells out in seconds).
