If you’ve been to a Tatler Ball, you’ll know that our invited guests certainly cannot slack in the sartorial department. And yes, that applies to men as well—even more so as we celebrate our 40th anniversary with the theme, Legendary.
A classic black tuxedo is all well and good, but how can you let your personality truly shine on the red carpet this year? Below, we offer some style tips for suiting up if you want to make a lasting, legendary impression.

1. Red Alert

Wearing red for our ruby anniversary is not mandatory at all, but if you feel powerful in this hue—why not? That was clearly the case for Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, who sported a red-hot Versace suit on the Oscars red carpet this year (and later went shirtless in the ensemble). As Liu demonstrates, red goes best with gold accessories, so pick out your fanciest watches and jewellery for the occasion.

2. Go for Gold

Our tip for looking good in gold? Make sure you get the right shade to match your complexion. That’s exactly what Henry Golding did at the 2019 SAG Awards. Not to be outshined by his Crazy Rich Asians co-stars Gemma Chan and Michelle Yeoh, the actor opted for a golden jacquard jacket with a wide satin shawl collar—by Tom Ford, no less.
3. Get Your Shine On

Fashion brands like Valentino, Celine and Louis Vuitton have all shown us that sequins are just as much for the lads as the ladies. If you really want to be in the spotlight at our ball, embrace the sparkle and throw on a sequin jacket just like Timothée Chalamet did at the 2022 Oscars. The Dune actor added even more bling to his look with his Cartier jewels. Perhaps you can flaunt some rubies for our 40th anniversary celebration?

4. Bet on Boutonnieres

A boutonniere is one way to add a dramatic flair to your look without walking around in sequins or shocking colours. We suggest you go big on them, just as much as Harry Styles did at the premiere of his film, My Policeman. His leafy boutonniere was a nice twist on the accessory which typically features a flower, and it also harmoniously matched the rest of his green ensemble courtesy of Gucci.
5. Stick to Traditions

You legendary look isn’t limited to just Western menswear. We certainly encourage our guests to embrace their Asian heritage at our soirée. We’re Tatler Singapore, after all. For proof that a traditional costume can be just as stunning as a suit, consider Kumail Nanjiani’s outfit for the premiere of Eternals. The Pakistani-American actor looked elegant while emphasising his cultural roots in a silk sherwani by House of Umar Sayeed.
6. Classics With a Twist

Maybe your idea of legendary doesn’t lean towards extravagance. You can still sport an understated look that wows in its own way. When Michael B. Jordan made his red carpet debut with his then-partner Lori Harvey, he nicely complemented her dramatic, jewel-encrusted couture gown with a Tom Ford tuxedo—in shiny satin. It’s safe but special.

7. Defy Expectations

Being a legend often means forging your own path in life—and in style. It’s the same thing Daniel Craig did when, after years of playing the masculine ideal that is James Bond, he showed up to the premiere of his final Bond movie in pink. Not black, not navy, but pink, a colour we could forget was associated with femininity when the British actor was bold enough to embrace it in its most vibrant shade by wearing a bespoke velvet suit. How will your surprise the other guests and leave an impression at the Tatler Ball?
