Cover Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus could serve as inspiration for the 42nd annual Tatler Ball this October

Society’s biggest night for fashion returns and this is what you should wear to the 42nd Tatler Ball this year

It is official. The anticipated 42nd Tatler Ball theme has been released: Xanadu.

And when the countdown is less than 39 days away to the biggest night in Singapore society, only one question comes to mind, how does one properly define utopia with clothing? For starters, Xanadu does not reference Olivia Newton John’s anthem or film that stilled pop culture during the summer of 1980.

Instead, our theme this year is a celebration of paradise, purpose and power that transcends the concept of time. And just by tracing the etymology of the word Xanadu alone, we already find ourselves in the heart of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem Kubla Khan, where fertile soil and beauty are a veritable bliss beyond Newton John’s disco.

In case you missed it: Xanadu: The 42nd Tatler Ball’s theme is a celebration of paradise and power

So trade your legwarmers and roller skates for vertiginous pointed pumps that sparkle and lend levity in your steps as you take to the Ball this October. And as for head-turning togs, look to poetry and even art, before you swap out drawstring whites for sweeping ballgowns that evoke the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.

Like a goddess rising from the sea in a shell, look to pearlescent hues as an inspiration for your eveningwear. Gowns inspired by art could feature ethereal, flowing fabrics—coming alive through silk chiffon or organza—in shades of the softest nudes, seashell pinks, celadon or seafoam greens. Even pearlescent hues will be good choices this year. Along with layers that billow like undulating ocean waves, we urge you to come in silhouettes that will command space.

Speaking of space, the outer limits will provide even more inspiration, so why don’t you look to the skies and let the otherworldly celestial bodies above guide you in your sartorial choices for the Tatler Ball. Think gowns that radiate the rays of the sun or dresses that capture the moonlight and stars.
