Tatler speaks to the Head of Brand & Lead Creative, Jack Gan about the exciting collaboration

In the last two decades, Malaysian streetwear brand Pestle & Mortar Clothing (PMC) has been dedicated to uplifting local talent through meaningful collaborations, from fashion designers to musicians. For its latest project, PMC teams up with global sportswear giant Lotto in an exciting three-way collaboration with Malaysian Super League team Sabah FC to present its official third kit.

The kit features the ‘1963’ jersey, which pays tribute to the historical moment when North Borneo became Sabah. It carries the tagline ‘Pride of Borneo’ and incorporates nostalgic elements from Sabah’s rich heritage, blended with modern sports aesthetics. “We are incredibly excited about the ‘1963’ Kit and what it represents. This collaboration is a testament to our unwavering dedication to our fans and the remarkable history of Sabah, in line with the spirit of Sabah Maju Jaya. We are confident that this jersey will ignite a sense of pride and unity among football enthusiasts worldwide,” says Ahmad Marzuki Nasir, CEO of Sabah FC.

Tell us about how this collaboration came about.

We were ecstatic when this conversation with Sabah FC first began. As huge football fans, it was a no brainer for us to be a part of this collaboration. Together with the folks at Lotto, we crafted a jersey that truly pays homage to Sabah’s rich history and heritage. It wasn’t till recently that we realised this is the first collaboration of its kind not only in Malaysia, but Asia! We are beyond excited to be part of Asian football history.

Why it’s important for PMC/local brands to support local football teams?

This collaboration was a real eye opener. It made us realise that local football teams never get enough credit. We witnessed first hand how much blood, sweat, and tears go into running a local football team. Not only do the players train relentlessly, it’s also a huge team effort from everyone in the organisation. It’s easy for football fans to follow international football leagues closely. Why not our local football teams? We pride ourselves as a Malaysian storytelling streetwear brand, and this is a true testament to that.

What is your favourite piece from the lifestyle collection?

It’s so hard for me to choose, especially when the past few months have been spent carefully crafting this collection! Aside from the jersey, my favourite piece would probably be the Varsity Jacket. It’s a collector’s piece with only 25 pieces made for sale. You’d be one of 25 people outside the Sabah FC Team rocking this!
