The Singapore singer gives us the low-down on his party look for the Gucci flagship reopening at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

What do you do when Gucci asks you to don a pink, feathered, double breasted suit for its grand reopening party? For Singapore musician Nathan Hartono, the answer was a resounding: YES.

Rocking up to the Italian brand’s 10,555 sq ft duplex store at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands in that fabulous outfit, accessorised with a Gucci Jackie bag, the suave crooner turned heads in the socially distanced crowd, and drew more than a few looks from star-struck passers-by.

But pulling off the look was not a walk in the park, as Hartono tells us. “It was terrifying,” he says. “Like, on the way here, I just didn’t dare touch anything. When I was trying to steam out the suit, it was very worrying. But I love it.” Read on to find out Hartono’s honest review of his party look for the night.

Okay, talk to me: what was the inspiration for your look?

Nathan Hartono (NH): Hmm, I don’t know, I didn’t put this together. (laughs) I mean, I guess I put it together in the sense that I picked and chose what I wanted, but it’s all Gucci stuff and it vibes with me very nicely.

I see a lot of feathers going on here.

NH: Yes, the feathers were... whenever like, you know, Gucci asks you if you want to have a suit with a feather boa attached to it, you don’t say no, because when else are you gonna wear something like this? But I must say, it was terrifying. Like, on the way here, I just didn’t dare touch anything. When I was trying to steam out the suit, it was very worrying. But I love it.

And how does it make you feel?

NH: It makes me feel powerful.

What else do you like about the look?

NH: I mean, like, I’ve always been a sucker for like these double breasted, kind of, suits. And I don’t own one myself. But yeah, it’s kind of nice to wear this for tonight. And also just, I don’t know, I’ve never worn a fully pink suit before. I’m like KIV-ing this for future things now...

Taking notes, keeping references.

NH: Exactly, exactly. So I’m just gonna like, copy this [look] somewhere down the road.

How would you describe Gucci in three words?

NH: It’s nostalgia for... is that two words or three words?

Three words!

NH: Three words... okay, I’m bad at these singular word things. I would say it’s weirdly nostalgic... (long thinking pause)

Okay, two is fine. (laughs)

NH: (laughs) It’s weird—because it’s like nostalgic, but not for a time that I ever lived in. Yeah, so like, I can’t possibly be nostalgic for this time, but something about it just speaks to your soul. Something about like just this old charm about it. Even though I wasn't alive in like the ’70s and ’60s. Like, you know, there’s a certain like, charm to it. It just feels very like... it just feels like it has like a nice rich history. Everything that you’re wearing, like the styles that go into it—I just feel the history behind it. And this is how someone back in the ’60s felt walking down the street with a feather boa...

Over the top, you know. Just casually, Like it’s normal.

NH: Yeah, that’s when like, when you could do things like that and just be like, okay, I feel it. I get it. I get it.

Cool. Thank you.

NH: Thanks, man.
