Meet Christina Chung, one of six Asia-based models who shared with Tatler how they’re breaking boundaries and refusing to be limited by gender, race, sexuality, size, age, religion or ability

“I’ve been approached by professional and amateur photographers for shoots since I was very young,” recalls Christina Chung. She signed up for catwalk training and was ready to become a model before choosing to work in the banking sector for a more sustainable career. She only started to pick up freelance modelling jobs a few years ago in her fifties but is now making waves in the local fashion scene as a silver model whose elegance defies time.

“In my [youth], models had to be young, beautiful and sexy,” she says. “However, I see the gradual transition from the old concepts to a more open-minded outlook nowadays—people’s perception of age has changed dramatically.” Chung’s journey has come full circle: just as she has started a second career and is loving the self-expression and artistic side of the job, her daughters are also now working as models in the city.

Is the Asian fashion industry diverse?

The fashion industry in Asia has been diversified but it is not so inclusive. Generally speaking, Asians are more traditional and conservative in their values, cultures and customs, and boundaries are set so that fashion complies with that. It will be a lengthy process for a “cultural revolution” to occur to evolve the fashion industry to be entirely inclusive.

You’re a mother of seven daughters, some of whom are also working as models; do you see modelling differently from your daughters?

My daughters love their modelling jobs; they are very artistic and have very good fashion sense. They love presenting the best of the products through their bodies and gestures; it’s a great channel for expressing themselves to. I have absolutely the same feelings about modelling and enjoy every job I do.

What is “beauty” to you?

I don’t see beauty as only a person’s face or body—beauty stems from the inner self. Being kind makes a person beautiful! Beauty is a whole package of a person, from her soul to manners and ego. They all come together to make a beautiful being.
