After 11 years at its helm, Jonathan Anderson leaves a parting gift for Loewe in the form of the Madrid bag

Taking over a little-known Spanish luxury house and transforming it into one of fashion’s most talked-about brands might have seemed like an impossible task. But in 2013, Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson accepted the challenge. Now, after an 11-year tenure, his transformative journey with Loewe has reached its conclusion, with American designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, formerly of Proenza Schouler, slated to take on the reigns.

Anderson’s final collection, unveiled in mid-March 2025, culminated a transformative period of 11 years marked by creative reinvention. Over the course of his tenure, he helped invigorate the brand, introducing a distinctly irreverent aesthetic with the implementation of vibrant colours, avant-garde design codes and unexpected collaborations. Among the standout pieces from his final runway was the debut of the Madrid bag.

Introduced during the Spring-Summer 2025 show at the Château de Vincennes in Paris, the Madrid bag encapsulates Anderson’s classic-meets-subversive design philosophy.

Shaped in a soft trapezoid silhouette, the Madrid bag is crafted from supple, high-shine calfskin leather developed exclusively for Loewe. Its generous pleated sides are drawn in by tubular straps, complete with cushioned shoulder padding for comfort. Inside, the bag is lined with nappa leather, a buttery, pliable material seen in other Loewe-Anderson staples like the Squeeze. A magnetic closure adorned with a jewel-like gold pebble adds a subtly sophisticated touch, while an exaggerated zip introduces an asymmetrical edge.

Loewe was founded in Madrid in 1846 by German leather artisan Enrique Loewe Roessberg and has remained rooted in the Spanish capital for nearly two centuries. It’s fitting, then, that Anderson’s parting product takes its name after the house’s birthplace. It’s a sentimental and apt homage to Loewe’s legacy of leather artistry.
