Immersion in the beauty of nature doesn’t have to be reserved for weekends and holidays. With the debut of the LAKAT x Nazareno/Lichauco sustainable fashion collection at ArteFino Fair 2024, you can ground your busy lifestyle in a wide range of earth tones and vibrant shades.
From the inception of the LAKAT brand, they’ve prioritised direct sustainable action that doesn’t sacrifice their aesthetic sensibilities. They work with a supply chain that weaves together local shoemakers, pineapple farmers, family-run rubber farms, and weaving communities in Kabankalan, Negros. Each person involved in the design process approaches their task with deep intentionality.

This made the partnership with the iconic design team Nazareno/Lichauco an exciting step forward. “For us, N/L is in a league of their own when it comes to high-level design,” shared Michael Claparols, co-founder of LAKAT. “Their vision and values align with ours, especially on sustainable development goals, innovation and high design sense.” The LAKAT and Nazareno/Lichauco teams spent over a year perfecting their sustainable fashion designs.

Eventually, they narrowed their options down to the eight best designs. Aside from environmental responsibility, the sustainable fashion collection highlights Filipino craftsmanship, using azo-free dyes on Philippine tropical fibres. “This is the first time we designed for a certain type of pineapple fibre, and we wanted to play with colours, contrasts, and shapes,” said Nazareno/Lichauco. “Using the azo-free dyes was important, especially since we have to be socially conscious of the objects we design and buy.”

The resulting collection blends contemporary street style with echoes of wellness activities, such as glamping by a lake or relaxing by the beach. Bold pinks, purples, and reds add pops of colour while evoking the shades of a sunset.
The sustainable fashion collection also features designs that emulate the waves in the ocean. For the LAKAT team, “this goes hand in hand with LAKAT’s sustainability goals of supporting life below water, not only on land. We endeavour to create awareness through sustainable streetwear and create happiness for those who wear LAKAT shoes.”
