Wunderkind Filipino designers Jude Macasinag and Prince Padilla of Novel teamed up for a poignant fashion project called Diasporic Studies. Macasinag and Padilla’s ready-to-wear pieces were on display and available at Guava Sketches, a small retail space along Chino Roces Avenue.
This showcase’s name alludes to the designers’ statuses as members of the Philippine diaspora. While Padilla was raised in Manchester, Macasinag is based in Paris, where he studies at the Institut Francais de la Mode.
“This all sort of came together naturally,” says Macasinag. “We decided to present two separate collections because Prince has a very strong point-of-view with his work, as I do with mine.”
He continues, “While Prince is very much about pragmatism and practicality, I’m all for the theatrics of dressing. We could be seen as polar opposites [when it comes to our work], but we find a lot of similarities.”
