Most—if not all—of us have seen the Korean film Squid Games, the 2021 hit series that sent Wi Ha Joon to international stardom. We were all moved by his portrayal of Hwang Jun-ho, the police officer who disguised himself as a guard and put his life on the line to save his brother.
“Through Squid Game, there are a lot of changes in my life. First of all, I was able to try a lot of things that I wasn’t able to do before. And I can say that through Squid Game, I got the opportunity to sit here together with you,” he says.
The Korean actor-model was in town for his fan meet at the New Frontier Theatre arranged by retail giant Bench. Ahead of his meet-and-greet, he catches up with the local press to talk about his first impression of the Philippines, what keeps him grounded and what role he would like to play next.

When Bench announced that one of their newest brand ambassadors—or as they’d like to call it, ‘Benchsetters’—was Wi Ha Joon, Filipino fans were delighted that the Little Women actor would fly to the country for an event. And they were not disappointed.
“It’s my first time to be able to visit the Philippines, and it’s for a fan meeting. I’m nervous but also very happy to be here,” says the actor. “My first impression of the Philippines since I arrived is the warmness of the weather and the eyes of the Filipinos. The people are very welcoming.” He adds that he feels “really grateful” for his fans.
