Get to know the Filipino designer behind the homegrown fashion label as she shares her design philosophies, inspirations and current favourites

After earning a degree in economics from the University of the Philippines, Techie Hagedorn thought she would be in the finance industry. Little did she know that she’d be where she is now, a  fashionpreneur with her local brand Alegre, that brings effortless elegant pieces created with Filipinas who are comfortable in their own skin and bodies in mind. Her iconic designs include the reinvented barong Tagalog, which was transformed into colourful women’s blouses that can be worn in both corporate and casual environments, and the sleeveless tops and posh jackets that highlight Abra’s traditional weaving and embroidery. Tatler sits down with her to know more about her personal favourites, ongoing projects and design inspirations.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration in design is still the Filipina. The Filipinas I know are loving, nurturing, bold and confident. They have a great sense of humour and of self and want to look good even if they are just lounging at home. In life, my inspiration comes from God, my family and close friends.

Tell us your favourites.

Jewellery. Anything chunky: rings, necklaces, bangles, earrings. I’m a fan of layering, so I like pieces that can be worn alone or stacked. I also treasure pieces from my husband and mother.

Cities. Now it’s San Pablo, Laguna and Nasugbu, Batangas. They have been our happy places during most of the lockdown. Manila is always a favourite, too. It has a vibe like no other.

Museum. I love the dioramas at the Ayala Museum. Just never gets old for me. The National Museum in Manila, which houses pieces like the Spoliarium by Juan Luna, is a great place to visit, too.

Most memorable trip. New Zealand in 2017. The place is just majestic in its beauty. Trips to Amanpulo are also always special. Also, a trip around Europe in 2019 with 14 other ladies.

Movies. Anything crime and suspense. I’m also a fan of psychological thrillers and horror [films].

Netflix/TV shows. Friends. I can watch this on repeat. On Netflix, I just finished binge-watching The Bold Type and I’m now watching The Serpent.

Jewellery and accessories. Earrings I think are good statement pieces that can frame your face nicely. A men-sized watch, a chunky necklace or a stack of bracelets can give an outfit that extra oomph.

Fragrance. Diptyque l’ombre dans l’eau.

Skincare and make-up. Right now, I use Perricone MD No Make-up foundation and Rituel de Fille undereye concealer for those Zoom meetings. I also swear by Aveeno Skin Relief moisturising lotion.

What materials and colours do you usually use in your designs?

I’ve always liked linen. It’s classic and elegant. I’m also a big fan of local weaves and try to incorporate them in my designs. I lean towards neutrals but I’m not one to shy away from a bold print either.

What moved you to start Alegre?

I started Alegre in the year 2009. I was looking for resort wear and could hardly find any available locally. The ones I found either didn’t fit my body type or was just not my style. So, I made a few pieces for myself. My friends saw them and encouraged me to make some and sell to them. From resort wear I made ready-to-wear jersey dresses, then jumpsuits and Filipino barongs; currently, I am making lounge dresses.

What have you been doing now? Any new projects?

Right now, I’m working on a new loungewear collection. Maybe incorporating some local weaves and embroidery in the designs.

What motivates you to do these projects now?

I have the time to sit and relax and take my time in making the collection. Also, I’ve been inspired at how, despite the work-from-home situation for a lot of people, my clients have continued to support Alegre and it’s been great! And I am beyond grateful. I count my blessings daily. Despite the craziness of the past year, there is so much to be thankful for. I wake up each morning with a grateful heart.
