The show was one of the most powerful at Paris Fashion Week so far, with a message of strength behind the clothes, a dramatic snow globe runway and a celebrity packed guest list including the likes of Kim Kardashian and 'Euphoria' star Alexa Demie

For the Balenciaga autumn-winter 2022 show, Demna Gvasalia brought the outside in with a windy snowstorm contained in an arena that show attendees looked in to. This large-scale snow globe was symbolic of preserving memories and seasons past, according to the show notes. Gvasalia also expressed his support for the people of Ukraine, saying, “This show needs no explanation. It is a dedication to fearlessness, to resistance, and to the victory of love and peace.”

Windswept models trudged along the snowy landscape, faring the “elements” wearing an array of skin-tight bodysuits or flowing garments with oversized fits. Thee colour palette mostly consisted of Balenciaga’s signature black, although there were pops of colour with floral prints in shades of red and orange, while the final look was a dramatic flurry of aqua.

Gvasalia explored the concept of weather resistant clothing, revisiting staple pieces such as hoodies, stretch dresses and trousers and combining them with unique designs including a pair of jeans turned into a top, or The Trash Pouch, inspired by a rubbish bag. Other innovations in this collection include the use of Ephea, a mycelium-based alternative to leather exclusively developed for Balenciaga, for a floor-length coat.

Kim Kardashian, a favourite of the fashion house, arrived completely wrapped in yellow Balenciaga packing tape—a standout look that also debuted on the runway. Although it appeared challenging to sit down in, and we assume that bathroom breaks were not on the agenda, we can only look forward to the many recreations and future iterations of this ensemble in seasons to come.
