And it’s back in a big way. The original It bag, the Paddington, has come swinging down the Chloé runway 20 years after its first debut
It’s true what they say: Icons never die. Back in the heady days of the early Noughties, the Chloé Paddington swung from the elbow of every major It girl, the list of Paddington fans reading much like a Y2K time capsule: Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Paris Hilton, Alexa Chung.
The Paddington first splashed onto the scene as part of Chloé’s first ever handbag line designed, of course, by then-creative director Phoebe Philo. The bag made its official debut on the Spring/Summer 2005 runway and was an instant classic. Its stylish slouch, rounded lines and chunky, oversized padlock and key fit perfectly into the boho chic styles that were dominating the runway, stores and streets.

The icon reimagined

Times and trends change and now, two decades after its launch, the Chloé Paddington is back. Creative director Chemena Kamali has reintroduced the bag for a modern audience, keeping all its signature design codes intact but refreshing it for a lighter, brighter feel.
Literally—the new Paddington is 25 per cent lighter than its predecessor, with the iconic hardware that is still functional but less heavy, for improved wearability. The construction has been refined and streamlined, built from supple washed buffalo leather for beautiful feel and wear. And the double zip of the original has made way for an easier single zip opening, and an enhanced drop on the handles so you can sling it over the shoulders and go.
