The Celine Homme winter 2023 show reveals an electrifying return to one of Hedi Slimane’s seminal haunts in Paris
A heady exuberance is closely linked to Le Palace in Paris. Originally built as a theatre dance hall in the 17th century but better known as a nightclub since 1978, this Parisian spot famously welcomed the beau monde to its lavish parties, masked balls and live performances, earning its rep as the French equivalent of New York’s legendary disco nightclub, Studio 54.

Among its regulars was a young Hedi Slimane, who began to frequent the club at 16. Regarding the iconic club as a sentimental place that triggered his future as a couturier, Celine’s French designer and creative director celebrated his 50th birthday party there in 2018. In recent news, he also chose Le Palace as the setting of his men’s winter 2023 show for the fashion house earlier this year.

The nightspot’s rich art deco interiors, neon lights and paintings constructed a moody and emblematic backdrop for the newly debuted collection, inspired by long, animated nights of partying while picking up on a movement that is appearing in major cities like Paris, London and New York. Perennially fascinated by the youth and frequently incorporating the energy they embody into his designs, the visionary explored this audience’s rediscovery of the 2000s electronic rock sound and scene to unveil some of his most archetypal pieces for Celine Homme.

Thus central to the collection are several “double leather” looks that pair black pants in Slimane’s signature narrow silhouette with studded biker and racer jackets. Suits were slightly raised and worn with cropped flared trousers, just as giant leopard prints featured on elegant silk shirts and oversized cashmere coats. Entirely soundtracked by the seminal Seventies New York proto-punk band Suicide and complemented by the models wearing Celine’s Nightclubbing fragrance from its Haute Parfurmerie collection, the runway show was given the name Paris Syndrome to reference its truly electric spirit.
