With its latest womenswear collection, Hedi Slimane’s Celine ignites a sense of renewal and bold expression for the contemporary woman
Hedi Slimane, image director of Celine, has often set the fashion world abuzz with his distinctive rock ‘n’ roll flair. Making its debut at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, the Celine women’s 2023 winter collection was no exception, showcasing the designer’s inspired vision for the French Maison.
Coined after Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, the two thoroughfares intersecting its location, The Wiltern, is a blue-green terracotta complex recognised as one of the finest examples of art deco architecture in the United States. Its steel-reinforced concrete façade features narrow windows and vertical neon signs that illuminate the marquee, while the interiors boast opulent murals, decorative plaster and tile work together with the auditorium’s centrepiece: an art deco sunburst ceiling. Through several transformations, the theatre has thrived as a prominent music venue for Prince, The Rolling Stones, Patti Smith and many more legendary performers.

Likewise bold, nostalgic and inventive, the pieces featured in Celine’s Age of Indieness runway show were clear testaments to Slimane’s ability to blend the past with the present to celebrate individuality, non-conformity and self-expression. It embraced the rebellious spirit of the indie grunge aesthetic popular from the Nineties to the noughties while infusing it with a modern flair.

Standout elements included tight leather jeans, chunky boots, and a bold layering of patterns that looked straight out of Nineties magazines. Silhouettes were sharp and sleek, accentuating the female form while retaining an air of nonchalant urbanity. With the addition of vintage-inspired accessories, from oversized sunglasses and tote bags to statement belts and scarves, each look effortlessly exuded attitude and style.
Similarly reflecting the raw and moody vibe of the rock ‘n’ roll scene, deep black, burgundy and brown hues dominated the collection. On the runway, these dark tones were punctuated by sequins, stripes and animal print accents, adding an edgy and playful touch to these curated ensembles for the contemporary woman.
Juxtaposed with the refined craftsmanship and attention to detail that Celine is known for, the defining features of Slimane’s Age of Indieness show prove why the French designer is a master of his craft. By merging past influences with his unique perspective, he brings forth a collection that shakes up the fashion scene yet again. This season’s offerings from Celine are a much-needed breath of fresh air, reminding us that style is always best expressed with confidence and conviction.
