From Saint Laurent’s Madonna exhibition to a music festival dedicated to Virgil Abloh, here’s how fashion is taking over the annual art fair

With the notable presence of fashion brands at the 2022 Art Basel Miami Beach, the annual art fair may seem like a Fashion Week spin-off. And that’s all the better for those of us who can appreciate our couture with a dose of culture.

This year’s line-up is especially appealing. Fashion houses like Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta have taken up artistic pursuits, whether via launching limited-edition art books or presenting exhibitions centred on photography, sculpture and painting.

Navigating Art Basel Miami Beach shouldn’t be as hard as deciphering a contemporary artwork, which is why we’ve highlighted all the relevant (read: fashion-focused) events that you can’t miss this year. Read on for the list.

Giorgio Armani Love Project

Where: Miami Design District

When: Until December 3

In a celebration of love, Giorgio Armani has unveiled a public art project along the Miami Design District featuring large-scale blue sculptures by Italian artist Marcantonio. The subject matter of the artworks? Animals in tender embrace; you’ll see a gorilla and a duck sharing a hug, for example, or a koala peacefully perched upon a rhino. Visitors can scan the accompanying QR codes of each sculpture to see the animals come to life on screen and lead them to the Giorgio Armani store, where they can discover the Italian fashion brand’s new genderless collection.

Art Basel is not without its parties, and the biggest one will undoubtedly be at the inaugural Mirror Mirror Music Festival, produced by Virgil Abloh Securities. The latter is a creative corporation founded by the late Off-White and Louis Vuitton designer, and now helmed by his wife Shannon Abloh. The festival itself is an ode to the fashion designer, bringing together many of his close collaborators and friends. The festival’s headliners include rappers Travis Scott and Skepta, as well as DJ Benji B. The partying will also be for a good cause: all profits from the event will be donated to the upcoming Virgil Abloh Foundation.

Sex By Madonna Exhibition

Where: Miami Beach

When: Until December 4

30 years after it was published, Madonna’s Sex is back in the spotlight. The book, which the pop superstar intended to be a celebration of female sexual self-expression, features a collection of erotic photographs shot by Steven Meisel. And while Sex was controversial when first released in 1992, it had a lasting impact on culture and style. In honour of the book’s anniversary, Saint Laurent set up an exhibition of large-format prints from the book at a pop-up gallery in Miami Beach. It will also offer limited-edition T-shirts and tote bags. Those looking to own the book are also in luck: the French fashion brand commissioned a re-issue of the book, with some copies to be signed by Madonna and auctioned off in support of her Raising Malawi fund.

Come Stai? Exhibition

Where: Miami Design District

When: Until December 4

Remember the colourful chairs that lined the front row at Bottega Veneta’s spring/summer 2023 fashion show? Those furnishings, as well as the swirled resin floor that made up the runway, were the works of Italian designer Gaetano Pesce, whom Bottega Veneta collaborated with for the Come Stai? exhibition. A selection of Pesce’s one-of-a-kind chairs will be available for purchase, as well as an accompanying book commissioned by the Italian fashion brand. The limited-edition publication, which is centred on the idea of collaboration, features a conversation between Pesce and art curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, as well as Pesce’s process in creating the chairs. If you can’t make it to Miami, fret not: you can also head to Bottega Veneta’s Singapore website to shop the playful pieces.

Louis Vuitton is no stranger to the art world. Over the years, the French luxury fashion brand has collaborated with Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince and more. At this year’s Art Basel, the maison is celebrating its legacy of championing artists by shining the spotlight on their works. Sculpture, paintings and photography will all be on display, but most notable of all are two wax figures of Kusama, created by the Japanese pop artist herself. The figures mark the 10th anniversary of her collaboration with Louis Vuitton, while nodding to their upcoming tie-up, from which a handful of bags will also be shown for the first time. Speaking of bags, Louis Vuitton will also display its latest Artycapucines collection, which we got a closer look at last month.
