Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt stuns on the Cannes red carpet with a custom Gucci saree, the first of its kind
The Cannes Film Festival has long been a stage for groundbreaking fashion moments. This year was no exception, as Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt debuted Gucci’s first-ever custom saree at the closing ceremony of the 78th annual festival. As a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, Bhatt chose to honour her Indian heritage in a dazzling creation that combined tradition with luxury Italian fashion in an East-meets-West fusion.
The bespoke Gucci saree was adorned with all-over crystal GG Monogram embroidery, reflecting both the luxury house’s craftsmanship and Bhatt’s personal connection to her cultural roots.

The design features a sleeveless, backless blouse with a plunging neckline and a floor-length skirt, topped with a palla-style drape that mimicked the classic saree silhouette. Styling, done by Rhea Kapoor, was kept minimalistic, as Bhatt accessorised with a diamond riviere necklace with kohl-rimmed eyes and a soft hairstyle.
This isn’t the first time a luxury fashion house like Gucci has drawn inspiration from Indian silhouettes. Hubert de Givenchy designed two saree-inspired looks for Audrey Hepburn, including one in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, while Christian Dior introduced a lehenga-style dress back in 1955.
