We’re drawing inspiration from our favourite Christmas movies and here are the outfits we want to recreate

A good Christmas film captures holiday cheer with a simple plot, a memorable soundtrack and, most importantly, a well-dressed cast of characters. How else would you know it’s a movie you can only watch in December if there aren’t mittens involved? Of all the classic Christmas films, these are five of our favourite looks.

1. Love Actually

Billy Mack (played by Bill Nighy) is our favourite character from Love Actually. Mack’s got attitude in spades, the outfits to match and we bet he’s the most fun to have a tipple with at the Christmas party. He does winter dressing with a rock ‘n roll twist—an intentionally cracked white leather jacket, snake print trousers and a purple shirt? Sign us up immediately.

2. Home Alone

Kate McAllister (played by Catherine O’Hara) may have forgotten her son Kevin at home, but she didn’t forget how to serve a look. She pulls off peak ’90s winter chic in a white turtleneck with huge gold earrings, and her voluminous bob adds an extra sprinkle of cool. The wide collar on her brown coat is perfect for snuggling into when the wind picks up a bit, and likely doubles as a great neck pillow on the plane to retrieve her child.

3. Die Hard

White tank tops and bare feet don’t exactly get us in the mood for Christmas, so we’re looking to Hans Gruber (played by Alan Rickman) for some holiday style inspiration. This slick villain has a penchant for sharp shooting and suiting, and we love this modern suit in a sea of oversized ’80s cuts. We like to think that Gruber wore a burgundy tie to acknowledge the festive season but paired it with a blue poplin shirt to prevent him from looking too Christmassy. He’s just not that kind of guy.

4. The Holiday

Amanda Woods (played by Cameron Diaz) has the best winter wardrobe of all fictional characters. Period. Made up of neutral shades like white, beige, brown and black, we still can’t get over how well she packed for her two-week trip. It can be challenging to gauge a vibe when you don’t have anything planned, but she did well to include outfits that would make Graham (played by Jude Law) fall in love with her. Woods looks way too sharp arriving in a sleepy English town, but this brown shearling coat, black trouser and pointy heel look is everything.

5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Cindy Lou Who (played by Taylor Momsen) gives us all kinds of childhood nostalgia with her uber-cute fur-trimmed cape. Red and white are a classic colour combination to celebrate the holiday season, but green is so much more fun. Hear us out: We think the Grinch (played by Jim Carey) is the best dressed character, and he’s nailed the head-to-toe green furry look in a fabulous way. Just look at those elongated fingers. If we had gloves like those, we’d probably be more interested in flaunting them rather than celebrating Christmas too.
