Let’s be honest—having a good curly hair day is often much harder than it seems. And though we hate to admit it, having a good day can sometimes depend on what our hair will look like.

The answer lies with your hair routine. Though it may be a hassle at first, with time and consistency, caring for your curls will become second nature, just like exercising a muscle!

You may be healing your locks from long-term heat damage, figuring out your curl pattern, or just looking to enhance your routine. These tips and tricks will help you kickstart your curly hair journey with the ultimate ingredient: confidence.

Curly hair thrives best with the right care, starting with a shampoo and conditioner designed for your texture. Avoid harsh chemicals like parabens and sulfates, and give your scalp a refresh every few weeks with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup. If you have looser or thinner curls, steer clear of conditioners with heavy oils like coconut or shea butter to prevent weighing your hair down.

Washing your hair too often can sometimes do more damage than good. If you live in a colder climate, constant shampooing can leave your hair too brittle. For those of us living in tropical countries, where sweaty days are an everyday inevitable, a thorough cleansing every other day will suffice.

To keep your curly hair soft, and tame frizz caused by humidity, and tangle-free, the right products make all the difference. If you prefer defined curls, opt for more gel. For softer, bouncier curls, a generous amount of leave-in conditioner will do the trick. No matter your choice, always apply your cream and gel products while your hair is soaking wet for the best results.

For drying

Choosing the right drying method for your curls depends on your hair’s porosity. While high-porosity hair benefits from a quick towel dry, low-porosity strands retain moisture better with a diffuser and low heat. Most standard hair dryers come with a diffuser attachment, which is designed to gently disperse airflow, enhancing curl definition while promoting healthier drying.

When it’s time for bed, try to sleep with dry hair and minimise friction by using a silk pillowcase, scarf or bonnet to keep your curls intact overnight.
