Cover In a recently held virtual event, Tatler friends rave about skincare favourites and the much-awaited arrival of Officine Universelle Buly in Manila

Officine Universelle Buly offers the beau monde an enchanting world of artisanal and bespoke beauty

“I think beauty is something universal. We are all looking to feel good in our skin and to have nice, quiet moments to ourselves, even if it’s only five minutes,” Officine Universelle Buly co-founder, Victoire de Taillac, tells our very own Stephanie Zubiri in an intimate virtual gathering organised by Tatler Philippines to commemorate Buly’s newly opened branch in Manila and talk all things Buly with various Tatler friends and likewise lovers of the French perfumery and beauty brand.

Tatler Managing Director, Irene Martel Francisco, warmly welcomed everyone to the event, revealing her affinity for a brand she's personally sought while in Paris. Jappy Gonzalez, founder and managing director of the retail empire that has brought curated boutiques like Univers to the fore and thus luxury brands like Buly to the Philippines, also shared a few words of welcome before introducing the special guest gracing the evening from all the way in France: Buly's co-founder Victoire de Taillac herself, who gave a glimpse of the brand's history and also shared her own skincare secrets.

Guests of the evening were treated to pristine experience boxes with Buly's artisanal products, Moët & Chandon champagne, and a sumptuous menu specifically prepared by Margarita Forés's Lusso—a mere taste of the lush experience that lies in store at the Officine Universelle Buly in Manila.

“[While] entering the space, you feel like you’re transported back in time,” shared jewellery designer Erica Concepcion-Reyes during the recently held event. “I love everything old-world. That’s why I love Buly. A friend gifted me with one of the products when [Buly] opened in Manila and the box is so beautiful, [and it’s] personalised with calligraphy. Since I received that first gift I’ve been visiting the store. I love the lip balm, the candles, and the hand wash.”

Several Tatler friends also proclaimed their love for Buly and their excitement for the recently opened store, including Mesa Ni Misis founder Juana Yupangco who exclaimed, “My favourites are the candles. They’re so beautiful. It’s like a piece of art that you can keep.” She also couldn’t forget to mention how her husband shares her affinity for the brand. “My husband loves the Camellia Seed Oil! We both use [Buly] and we both love it.”

Offering a vast assortment of beauty products, skincare solutions, and essential toiletries, Buly truly caters to people of all ages and genders. Hence, what people always inevitably adore about Buly is that it’s an incredibly personal brand.

“Buly is about self-care. It’s about learning how to take care of yourself through these great products naturally,” said Jappy. “We have experts in the store that can help you out so that if you have any questions, they’ll be very ready to answer you.”

Victoire also shared, “We want to give options. We don’t want to be a brand that says a beauty routine is one plus two plus three. It’s not like that. We have a conversation with our customers and we try to guide them [to products that] would fit their own tastes.”

I think it's most important to be your own beauty expert. You need to know your skin. You need to evolve your routine.

She went on to say that, especially in a tropical country like the Philippines, skincare is of the essence. “Even if you have a humid climate, you [spend a lot of time] in an air-conditioned room or office. Air conditioning is so dehydrating to the skin.” The frequent switch between hot and cool temperatures can be damaging to the skin. Victoire relayed, “I see it in all the Asian countries we are working with. Customers find it challenging to balance their skin because of this huge change you have in one day.”

Victoire recommends Buly’s comforting and all-natural plant oils, best massaged onto the body and over the face like a nightly hydrating mask. Jappy also highlights the acclaimed Pommade Concrète, a nourishing everyday cream for the hands and feet.
