Rihanna's Makeup Artist Shares Her Best Pre-Red Carpet Look Tips

Global Makeup Artist for Fenty Beauty, and personal makeup artist to Rihanna, Priscilla Ono, shares how to use some of the brand's newest launches

The new year has just begun and the holiday spirit is still going strong for most of us here in Singapore as we gear up for Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day celebrations.

While you start thinking of new makeup looks to wear for CNY or V-day, don't forget your skincare. And for that, one of the beauty industry's trendiest brands is all set to help beauty junkies multi-task when it comes to their beauty regimes.

Fenty Skin has introduced its new Pre-Show Glow, an at-home beauty treatment that may help you look photo-ready in no more than a minute. Think of it as a one-minute facial that you can indulge in before applying any makeup. This makeup prep step aims to brighten, smoothen and reduce the look of any dark spots while evening texture over time. The formula contains 10 per cent AHAs, rooibos, and fruit enzymes and extracts to cleanse and purify the skin easily.

And who better than Queen RiRi's personal makeup artist Priscilla Ono to share with us some of her favourite skincare and makeup tricks?

Why is the Pre-Show Glow such a great pre-makeup step?

PO: Great skin is always going to make your makeup look better, which is why I’m really excited about Fenty Skin’s Pre-Show Glow. It is the ultimate makeup prep step because it only takes one minute to get smoother, glowing skin. Plus it has a really gentle formula, so there is no downtime after you use it. I can apply makeup immediately after. Rihanna uses it before every red carpet and event!

Can you share some of your go-to skincare and makeup tricks that you always use on Rihanna to achieve a flawless look especially before a major event?

PO: Skincare is key! It is very important to prep the skin, so leading up to the event we always make sure her skin is well hydrated and exfoliated. Well-prepped skin will always result in better makeup application. Once we’ve prepped and moisturised Rihanna’s skin, we always start with the foundation to give her a flawless, even base. I especially like to use Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer and Soft Matte Longwear Foundation on the red carpet. The primer will improve the foundation's application and lastingness. Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation has a gorgeous soft matte finish that eliminates shine, evens out her skin and looks really natural. Lastly, I would say that Invisimatte Blotting Powder is a secret weapon for any event! You can use it to touch up and remove shine from your makeup throughout the day, I always have it in my bag!

What are some of the best or most creative ways that you can use the new Liquid Killawatt Fluid Freestyle Highlighter?

PO: Liquid Killawatt is so multifunctional. One of my favourite ways to use it is on the eyes. You can wear it on its own, or as a shimmering base in combination with a powder shadow. When you use it on the eyes, blend it up to the brow bone. It gives such a beautiful sheen and glow-from-within look.

What is one piece of advice you’d offer to anyone who would like to achieve Rihanna’s signature makeup look but isn’t confident in using highlighters?

PO: Highlighter is one of the best ways to give your skin an instant beautiful glow and it’s so easy to apply. If you’re just starting out with highlighters, I would recommend applying it where you would apply blush, on the tops of your cheekbones up into your temple. Another favourite trick is that I like using my highlighters as an eyeshadow!
