Hermès unveils its first chypre perfume, Hermès Barénia—a captivating fragrance crafted by renowned perfumer Christine Nagel that embodies bold femininity and celebrates the brand’s rich heritage
Few brands command the reverence that Hermès does in the sphere of luxury fragrance. With a rich heritage steeped in craftsmanship and artistry, the French luxury house has now ventured into new territory with the launch of Barénia, an eau de parfum that is its first chypre fragrance.
Crafted by Christine Nagel, the creative director of Hermès Perfumes, the groundbreaking Barénia celebrates femininity and is the result of years of hard work. It also showcases Nagel’s talent for creating unforgettable fragrances that represent the Hermès woman: confident, bold and unapologetically herself. To date, she has crafted more than 20 for Hermès, including the well‑loved Twilly d’Hermès collection and unisex scents such as Oud Alezan, also released this year.

Barénia pays homage to and is named after Hermès’s homonymous heritage leather with a supple, highly sensual texture that absorbs the oils on the skin, developing a patina over time that is unique to its wearer. The fragrance, billed as a skin scent, mirrors this aspect in that it settles down to an aroma that plays off its wearer’s natural scent, leaving a distinctive trail that is truly one’s own
Barénia has a scent profile that is a harmonious blend of fresh, floral, and woody notes. The delicate sweetness of butterfly lily intertwines with the fruity and slightly tangy miracle berry, creating a delightful contrast, while the warm anchor of oakwood and intense patchouli lends depth and sensuality to the scent, making Barénia an elegant addition to Hermès’s fragrance portfolio. The maison extends this chypre scent to body care with two new products fragranced with the captivating aroma: a body cream, housed in a minimalist glass jar, and a bar soap engraved with the stylised initial of the brand name.

Created by long‑time Hermès collaborator Philippe Mouquet, the Barénia bottle was inspired by Hermès’s Collier de Chien bracelet. An enduring house classic that drew references from real dog collars, the bracelet dates back to 1923, when Hermès was commissioned to design a collar for a client’s bulldog. A few years later, a Parisian customer looking for a belt to accessorise her outfits was especially drawn to the maison’s dog collar, which inspired the luxury brand to create a belt adorned with four‑faceted Médor studs and a ring. The characteristics of this belt eventually led to the creation of the iconic Collier de Chien bracelet. These same stylistic elements now adorn the elliptical‑shaped Barénia bottle. Echoing the line of the bracelet, it features a metal overlay over its shoulders that bears four contoured studs, making for a symbolic design that reflects the fragrance’s timeless appeal.

More than just a new member of Hermès’s fragrance family, Barénia is a statement of identity that resonates with those who appreciate elegance blended with authenticity. As this captivating scent finds its place in the world of luxury beauty, it is poised to become a classic and timeless addition to the fragrance wardrobes of discerning perfume enthusiasts worldwide.
