To celebrate the late designers life and legacy, this year’s Met Gala served looks channelling both his iconic designs and personal quirks

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty was the theme for this year’s Met Gala, and celebrities who flocked to the fundraising event at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art paid tribute to the German designer’s legacy in a variety of creative ways.

Their inspired interpretations of the theme resulted in a plethora of exciting beauty looks that channelled the signature Lagerfeld sensibilities—think copious amounts of black and white, dark glasses and feline finishes.

While Lagerfeld was best known for his long tenure at Chanel (from 1983 till his death in 2019), designing some of fashion’s most memorable ensembles that continue to inspire to this day, he was also renowned for his distinctive appearance: only wearing his hair in a ponytail, sporting black sunglasses and, in his later years, always wearing gloves.

From his signature designs at Chanel such as headbands, bows and pearls to elements from Lagerfeld’s personal life—silver locks and references to his beloved cat Choupette—these are our favourite hair and make-up highlights from the 2023 Met Gala.
