Met Gala 2023: The most stylish Asian stars, from Michelle Yeoh to Blackpink’s Jennie

K-pop star Jennie dug through Chanel’s archives for this vintage number. The white, off-shoulder minidress features a feminine scalloped neckline and a pleated skirt, as well as a black ribbon adorned with a white camellia flower. The Blackpink member elegantly completed the look with black gloves.

Song Hye-Kyo’s surprise appearance at the Met Gala was much welcomed: the South Korean actress looked refined as ever in a pale pink silk and lace dress by Fendi, of which she is brand ambassador.

Music star Jackson Wang was one of many men to channel Karl Lagerfeld on the red carpet. The singer bleached his hair in an ashy hue to mirror Lagerfeld’s famously white locks. And while he traded the German’s signature tuxedo for a black military jacket by Louis Vuitton, Wang made sure to wear Lagerfeld’s signature accessories: black gloves and sunglasses.

Stephanie Hsu’s dramatic Met Gala look showed us all the possibilities of a monochromatic outfit. Her Valentino ensemble, covered in sequins and complete with a tie and collar, played to Lagerfeld’s penchant for androgynous designs.

Ke Huy Quan was another Karl Lagerfeld impersonator—and a convincing one at that. The Everything, Everywhere, All At Once star accessorised his Dior Men pinstripe suit with fingerless leather gloves—just the way Lagerfeld preferred them—and a glittering brooch that demonstrated his flair for jewellery.

Ashley Park did the fingerless gloves thing too, but her outfit stood out from the rest. The Emily in Paris star was clad in a glorious fishnet gown by Michael Kors, which she styled with a pearl belt in the spirit of Coco Chanel.

Mindy Kaling’s sculptural white gown, embellished with fringes, sequins and floral embroidered, is comparable to the craftsmanship often seen on Chanel gowns. Surprisingly, the actress was actually wearing Jonathan Simkhai instead.

Standing out in a sea of black and white looks, Bling Empire star Christine Chiu made a bright red statement on the white carpet. Her strapless red dress—inspired by a vintage Chanel look—was paired with a long, feathered cape that was trimmed in tulle.

Eileen Gu tapped on Hong Kong designer Robert Wun’s debut haute couture collection for her Met Gala comeback. The Olympic star flaunted a white peplum gown that appears to have been a stained by red wine—a playful look that also nodded to Lagerfeld’s sense of irony.

Barbie actor Simu Liu ditched his Ken get-up to cosplay as Karl Lagerfeld for the Met Gala instead. The Marvel star’s Versace tuxedo was one thing, but the details really sold the look: Liu opted for a buttoned-up collar, a tie, a necklace, and a pair of leather gloves.

Trust a Chanel muse to know how to pay homage to its former designer. Chinese model Liu Wen was the picture of timeless beauty in a black Tory Burch gown, which featured a tulle skirt adorned in white floral appliqués.

Chinese model He Cong took a stab at the Karl Lagerfeld look, too, but her results were refreshingly minimalistic. She paired a collared, sleeveless white top with a long black velvet skirt.

American entrepreneur Wendi Deng and her daughter Grace Murdoch made a lovely pair in their pale, tulle dresses, beautifully embroidered in sequins and crystals.

Staying true to her eclectic style, Instagram head of fashion Eva Chen sported a dress inspired by a Karl Lagerfeld design for Fendi in 2000. The metallic gown she wore was made by current Fendi designer Kim Jones, and finished with lime green gloves.
