Everything you need to know to find your new signature scent

First of all, there are many types of fragrances, differentiated by the level of perfume oil concentration. This affects the longevity of the fragrance or how long it can last on your body. For men, the important ones are aftershave, cologne, eau de toilette and eau de parfum, arranged in lowest to highest concentration.

Each scent has top, middle and base notes. Throughout the day, the opening top notes will evaporate to leave the lingering smell of the base. Professional perfumers refer to the combination of all the notes as an accord, which would would fall into the four general categories of scent families: woody, floral, oriental, and fresh. Oriental refers to vanilla, amber, musk and spices whereas fresh encompasses herbal, citrus and oceanic scents. The fragrance wheel can provide a more detailed description, such as green or woody oriental.

But how do you know which scent is right for you? Our advice is to know your motives and end goal. However, it is important to understand that there is no singular scent that perfectly embodies abstract concepts you would like to achieve, from power to sex appeal and masculinity. Next, you go shopping to figure out which scents you like before you make the commitment. As a starting point, you can think about your favourite season or ask friends for recommendations.

Once you have made your choice, you will need to know how to apply it. Aftershave is often formulated with soothing ingredients, such as aloe vera, and can be applied to the lower jaw after a shave but with the other types of fragrances, it is best to steer clear from the face. Instead, apply them to pulse points or warmer parts of your body to provide a pleasing sillage or lingering trail. This includes the neck, wrist, chest, forearm and shoulder—but not all at once because a little goes a long way!
