Makeup experts weigh in on choosing the perfect lipstick shade based on one's skin tone

By now, thousands of lipstick shades have already been introduced to the beauty industry. A plethora of nudes, reds, and pinks later, and some are still wondering which shade best suits their complexion. The options can be overwhelming, but to make things easier, we asked makeup experts which colours match those with morena or fair skin.

And their answers might help with everyone's makeup dilemma:

Thea Dionisio

Thea Dionisio has been in the makeup industry for nine years and has painted the gorgeous faces of Tricia Centenera, Vania Romoff, and Sarah Labahti, among many others.

For fair skin, shades of pink, coral, and peach tend to look best while orange-based reds or brown nudes look great on warm complexions.

I usually ask my client what they prefer and if they have brought their own personal lipstick [to match with] what they are wearing, of course, their skin tone, [and] if the event is outdoors or indoors. I only suggest lip shades if and when I am asked.

Sometimes, some clients do not like full makeup and just prefer lipsticks. There are also the shape of lips to be considered, if thin or full, upwards or downwards, small or large lips, etc.

For fair-skinned, the nude shade natural look is always a winner—not too much red shade but a hint of red and pink blended, achieving peach and red.

For tanned skinned, more like autumn leaves, brown to chestnut brown blended with nude shades works to achieve a caramel look.

Again, it depends on the client's preference, and if I am asked for advice without compromising the client's choices, we will agree to find a way to incorporate each other's ideas.

Red is the universal favourite colour and can be blended with different shades.

Your lip shade should be your signature. There are no rules with colour. It’s a matter of preference. Find what you think looks best on you and own it.

You can really wear whatever shade you feel that's great on you. As a general rule, fair skin ladies look great in pinks and reds with orange undertones, whereas tanned skin ladies look great with peachy, coral and brown hues, as well as red with bluish undertones.

Top of mind, these are my go-to shades for every skin tone:

Fair-skin—muted pink, bright reds.

Tanned skin—mauve, rosewood, and brick red.

However, these days products have greatly improved, so much so that one lipstick shade can complement every skin tone. Feel free to experiment with different colours no matter what your skin tone is.
