Want to find the right lipstick colour? Yves Saint Laurent's latest at-home lipstick technology lets you create thousands of shades!

You can own hundreds and thousands of lipstick and still not find the one that suits you best; for many beauty enthusiasts, this means frequent travels to makeup boutiques and more trial and error efforts. This year, spare yourself from the long hunt, Yves Saint Laurent beauty (YSL) has officially released the Rouge Sur Mesure Lip Colour Creator, a small machine that lets you create a new shade of lipstick each time you need it.

In 2020, L'Oreal first came out with its Perso Smart Skincare system; however, it was still just a prototype. The gadget works like a handheld skin care dispenser that doles out a serving of customised formula each time the user presses it. This framework was quickly adopted by YSL, but instead of making skincare formulas, it produces different shades of a luxury lipstick.

If you ask us, the device, which retails for US$299 (about PHP15,449.78) is quite a good bargain considering the number of lipstick shades that you can come up with. It uses colour cartridges filled with YSL formula or "ink" in red, nude, orange, and pink.

Through Rouge Sur Mesure Lip Colour Creator's AI-based system, you can create "thousands of bespoke YSL Velvet Cream Matte Finish lipstick shades" with one tap. Using a companion app, you can scan photos where you want your lipstick shade to be patterned after. Get a shade inspired by Mia Wallace nude lip from Pulp Fiction, Audrey Hepburn's baby pink lips in Breakfast at Tiffany's, or even Marilyn Monroe's bold red lips.

There are also options to use a wheel to pick and tweak the hue you like. If you're running out of inspiration, you can just let the algorithm come up with three options for you based on what you’re wearing. Once you have chosen a colour, just press 'create' and the machine will dispense a single serving that you can apply with a special brush.

According to YSL, each cartridge is larger than one of their typical lipsticks in the market. The brand also assured that the cartridges have a built-in chip that keeps track of when they were last opened and when their expiration dates are to make sure users of the product are safe.

While the innovative beauty gadget has already garnered plenty of attention online, YSL promised that there is more to come for beauty enthusiasts around the globe.

The device is now available for pre-order.
