What is your skin type?

Combination, and currently in perimenopausal stage (sensitive to sun damage, wrinkling and laxity).

Who or what influenced your skincare routine?

My first "influencer" was my mom. She was always very simple and natural with her skincare. Then when I lived in New York City for college and work, I was exposed to a lot of new, boutique skincare brands that were very innovative. They taught me to look for quality ingredients above just branding.

What is your evening skincare routine?

I use cleansing oils more than foamy washes. I use Living Libations frankincense oil that I apply with a small bamboo sponge. A couple of times a week, I will use Dermalogica's cleansing gel and mild scrub. After cleansing, I add Vitamin C serum from Luminisce Skin Clinic, then I add a treatment serum or ointment for melasma. This will change as I don't like my skin building resistance or dependence on any products. I cap it off with Hindy Weber Skin's healing face oil all over my face, neck, decollete, hands, elbows, and knees.

What are your holy grail products?

I would have to go with my skincare line of course! I have a Hindy Weber healing face oil, restorative eye & lash balm, dewy blush stick and my pleasure body balm.

I also love Dr Hauschka, Dermalogica, Buly 1803, Weleda, Living Libations, Body Food All-Natural, Renee Rouleau, Aesop. There's a lot more for different areas of the body like hair, teeth, and so on.

How did you find a skincare routine that works for you? What was your trial and error process?

In a sense, it was much easier for me to edit my skincare routine because I have certain criteria that I follow. I don't believe there are real quick fixes. My skin may benefit superficially but, in the long run, it may even backfire on me and then it becomes a bigger problem to treat. That's happened to me with stronger treatments. I prefer non-toxic, natural, botanical formulations. I support this with regular visits to my dermatologists, Dr Jonathan Yu and Dr Kaycee of Luminisce. They know what my sensitivities are and they know I am more about low-risk, long-term 'skinvesting'.

What is a skincare hack you think we should know?

Explore washing with cleansing oils instead of abrasive or soapy face washes. Also, be very careful with your sunblock vis-a-vis your makeup. They could form a chemical reaction that will give you even worse [skin problems like] sun damage. Lastly, if you are careful about sun damage, then it is most likely you are also sensitive to indoor light, even the light from our screens. I have an app that lowers the blue light on my gadgets. It is called IRIS.

Do you use facemasks?

Yes, I usually use Peter Thomas Roth, Aesop, or I make my own using pure Bentonite Clay and some essential oils.

Do you have a skincare horror story?

I have had a really strong RF (radio frequency) treatment that left half my face paralysed for 3 months. That was so stressful, to say the least. Since then, I have been extra careful with any cosmetic treatment -- no matter how good it may look on other people. I research a lot and will check the side effects from many different published peer-reviewed articles before jumping in.

How often do you practise skin fasting?

About one week a month, I will fast and just clean my skin with a cotton or bamboo sponge, water, and then apply my healing face oil.

Are there any skincare rules you’ve broken that have done wonders to your skin?

I have started tanning again after over 15 years of abstaining. This time, I approach the sun as a healing modality, not just for aesthetics. I have a special natural tanning oil, I also protect my face as if I was in a dessert, and enjoy the morning sun. I feel so much healthier and more vibrant. I realised my immune system really needed sun exposure. I am studying more about sun harmony now.
