Cover From the Garden echoes a symphony of citrusy and earthy dimensions

Father and son perfumer Olivier and Sebastien Cresp reveal Maison Margiela’s new fragrance that brings back memories of sun-drenched afternoons by the garden.

The grounding experience of touching the earth, the satisfaction of harvesting ripe, succulent tomatoes and citruses, and the lively hum of bees in the atmosphere–these are the images that Maison Margiela’s new perfume, From the Garden, intends to conjure—and it does so, beautifully.

Created by the legendary perfumers Olivier Cresp and his son, Sebastien, From the Garden is an uplifting, gender-neutral fragrance that brings delightful sunny days spent in the garden to mind.

“The fizziness of green Mandarins...We wanted to illustrate that burst of freshness. We picked the tomatoes from their vines and then worked with tomato leaf accords and blackcurrant. It is very distinctive. The green Mandarin also gives a crisp and fresh side [to it],” says Sebastien.

The beautiful combination of tomato leaf accord and green Mandarin notes evokes a refreshing, juicy aroma, while patchouli and geranium notes lend the perfume a humid, earthy dimension. The juxtaposition of freshness and these earthy elements results in a refined fragrance that brings to mind cheerful childhood memories of playing outdoors and running under trees.

“This is an original idea submitted long ago, and we worked [on it] for a year to give it a fresh, vegetal character,” adds Sebastien.

As From the Garden touches the skin, the citrus woody perfume emits delightful top notes of green Mandarin, grapefruit, and blackcurrant accord. Once this initial burst fades, a symphony of tomato leaf accord, geranium bourbon heart Madagascar and rose accord kicks in. Finally, a harmonious combination of patchouli Indonesia, Cristal moss and white musks lingers throughout the day.

In creating this perfume, Olivier drew inspiration from his childhood experiences, playing in the garden with his father. The scent of the plants, the tactile memories, and, later, the shared moments with his son, Sebastien, all contributed to the creation of From the Garden. The fragrance’s green and earthy notes transport Olivier back to those cherished moments, immersing him in the serene atmosphere of a sunlit, verdant space.

Olivier, who has been working with the renowned fragrance company Firmenich for 32 years, is a legendary French perfumer known as one of the brightest and most respected in the industry. Born in Grasse, a French town famous for perfumery, he was raised in a family with a rich heritage in fragrance. His great-grandfather cultivated roses and jasmine, while his grandfather traded natural ingredients. On the other hand, Sebastien was exposed to the art of perfumery at an early age, having witnessed his father work on some of the world’s most iconic scents. This inspired him to take the same path as his father and eventually establish his reputation in the industry for creating impactful and innovative fragrances.

“Sebastien and I have the same style. We both like short formulas. [We are] very minimalist. We were two brains working on one idea [in creating this fragrance]. It’s lots of pleasure and fun [working together as father and son],” Olivier wraps up.
