In an interview with this young beauty-preneur, she talks about her beauty routine, skincare must-haves, and her new venture on all things bright and beautiful

How is The Collective different from other online beauty platforms?

The Collective aims to not only be a helping hand in curating an efficacious routine, but to provide comfort in the experience as well. We set ourselves apart with our curation process. It is rigorous and data-oriented. We start with identifying the need, then research into brands that meet that criterion. For many of the brands, we work directly with the founders to give us in-depth insight into the results they had with their products, and their brand DNA. We then create our assortment by looking at their line of products, the formulation and the individual ingredients; it’s important that they are effective, meet their claims and, most importantly, are safe for our customers to use. Once we have selected the products, we then apply for Philippine FDA certification. This is a process we take seriously that some other platforms do not comply with. All products sold on The Collective have FDA approval in multiple countries ensuring quality and safety.

What was your inspiration behind it and why the need?

Many of the existing platforms target a specific type of woman. Michael [Hearn, co-founder of The Collective] and I noticed that there was a gap in the market and felt inspired to conceptualise and build a beauty website that demonstrates true representation: whether it be with your skin type, concerns, gender or sexuality. We believe this type of thinking is the most natural progression towards creating a healthier society that aims to look at beauty as an emotion not exclusive to one type of person.

What is beauty for you?

Beauty is the confidence you have in yourself.

Can you give tips on curating a skincare regimen?

The building blocks to a good skin care regimen are—cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen. The first things to think about when curating your routine are: what skin type do you have, what are the goals you want to achieve. This will inform you of the type of ingredients to look for in the products and if they pinpoint what you want to achieve.

We know this can be a little daunting, particularly when new to skincare or perhaps never have felt comfortable talking about it. So, we developed a Skincare Quiz on The Collective website that creates a routine tailored to you.

How do you choose the brands to include in The Collective’s line-up?
The Collective has a growing number of brands both international and local brands. Our current line-up includes exclusive brands like Faace, Alder NY, Even Prime, Pestlo and Kansoskin. We will be onboarding Gem, Lumin, Goto Beauty and many more in 2022. We also enjoy having our local brands like Dermtropics, Nala and of course our close friends at Aivee Skin—all of whom have great FDA track records. Working with more local brands is something we are keen on exploring further.

We discover brands through a mix of research, visiting stores whenever we travel, cosmetic articles and personal recommendations. It is important that we do not oversaturate our website with an abundance of brands and products. We aim to drown out the noise, showcase truly authentic and result-based products. We do not believe that “hype” or price are indicators for achieving healthy skin.

What products do you recommend for those who live in hot/humid countries like the Philippines?

A great cleanse allows for a better base for any other steps in a routine to follow. Beginning with a face wash to remove the daily build-up is key. Alder New York’s Everyday Face Cleanser is a lightweight face wash that packs a punch. It has AHAs to help balance your skin’s composition, and sea kelp extract to soothe inflammation and encourage collagen production, all the while promising a gentle but deep clean.

Once you have a clean canvas, you can then treat your skin with a skincare cocktail of ingredients to prep and sooth it for the high Philippine temperatures. Faace’s Sweaty Mask is the best way to look refreshed on a hot day; it can also be used as a quick pick-me-up after a workout, or while you sleep. It’s cooling and soothing, promotes collagen production and detoxifies your skin. Such a great treat for your skin after a long, hot, day wearing our protective masks.

Then, of course, ensure you create a shield of protection with SPF. Anessa’s Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk has Aqua Booster EX and Thermo Booster technology, making it even more effective when in contact with sweat, water, and heat, which makes it perfect for our climate!

Splurge vs Save. Which skincare/beauty items are worth the splurge? Which ones aren’t?

Splurge on moisturisers and sunscreen! These are products that sit on your skin all day, so their ingredients have more time to penetrate. Price does not indicate efficacy, take more care in looking at the ingredients and their product claims to ensure that they work for you. Save on make-up removers and eye creams. You can skip these altogether by double cleansing with your current face wash, or spot-treating your under-eyes with your everyday moisturiser.

What are your skincare and beauty must-haves?

I have balanced to dry skin, with flair ups during allergy seasons. Kansoskin’s Simply Better Barrier can be used on both the face and body, developed in Singapore for people with eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. I love using it to spot treat areas, or as a moisturiser/primer under my make-up on drier days. Simply Better Barrier is rich in antioxidants to protect my skin, but also has ceramides that help increase my moisture levels. I keep it on my bedside table and on my desk at work.

I love having a weekly self-care ritual and really take time to myself. Pestlo’s The Seed Real Collagen Mask is a great fit for this. It comes as a dry formula made from seaweed from the Indian Ocean. You mix it with water, tea, or milk, to form a gelatinous mask that you can form onto your face and leave on while you listen to music or a podcast. Personally, I found it shows instant effects of hydration and improvement in skin elasticity when you remove it. I’m always impressed by it.

The Collective Gua Sha has become a cult-favourite on our website but is a tool that I use constantly. When used properly, it promotes lymphatic drainage and relaxes the muscles. It is made of stainless steel, so it is antimicrobial and is cool to the touch. On my face, I love to pair it with a cleanser, moisturiser or mask, and with lotion on my body. I always feel relaxed after using the Gua Sha.

If you could only bring three beauty items on a trip, what would they be and why?

With a limited number of products, it is important to ensure that they tackle all my concerns while making sure they protect and improve the health of my skin.

Evenprime’s Cleansing Gel is pH-balanced, which is important for protecting the health of our skin barrier. I find this most important when travelling—so it is my ideal partner-in-crime removing all my make-up and build-up of the day while ensuring that my skin is hydrated with ingredients like vitamin b and hyaluronic acid. I have also flown with it, and the packaging and product stayed perfectly intact!

Pestlo’s Saferecipe This is a moisturiser-sunscreen hybrid with SPF50+++! My skin is balanced to dry, so I need all the hydration it can get. It is an effective two-in-one with the texture and scent leaning more towards a moisturiser, which makes applying it feel luxurious without compromising sun protection.

Faace’s Tired Mask is a restorative treatment that can bring life back to your skin. I would use this as a quick boost for five to ten minutes after a flight, before heading out and overnight treatment for the evenings after. It has aloe vera to hydrate, caffeine to calm down any irritations from a long journey, vitamin c for radiance and frankincense which is extremely healing.
