Ever wondered why hyperpigmentation worsens even though you're using every brightening and clarifying product under the sun? Dr Kiyoshi Sato explains why
"Microbiome" is currently the buzzword in skincare, and for good reason. Microbiome comprises a community of microorganisms that live on and in the layers of of our skin. They include good fungi, viruses, and indigenous bacteria, which protect skin from harmful pathogens that cause infections and irritation.
However, our skin can weaken over time from elemental exposure, ageing, stress, diets, and unhealthy lifestyles, leading to inflamed and imbalanced microbiome. It leads to various skin issues including acne, rosacea, eczema, premature ageing, dull and dry complexions, and hyperpigmentation.
Hence, investing in a proper self-care routine can help keep your skin healthy and happy. Enter Dr. Kiyoshi Sato, chief technology officer at the Clé de Peau Beauté laboratory, a pioneer in skin brightening with over 30 years of experience in the skincare industry.
Overseeing research that involves the treatment of dark spots and skin blemishes, Sato is credited with many powerhouse ingredients that appear in Clé de Peau Beauté's formulations, including the new-and-improved Concentrated Brightening Serum and an upgraded version of its suncare duo.
Sato shares his skincare routine and tips to prevent hyperpigmentation. He also delves into the features of the brand's latest brightening products, including a multilevel brightening technology that clarifies, smoothens, and brightens stubborn dark spots.

How can we maximise the efficacy of the Concentrated Brightening Serum?
The serum harnesses a powerful dual brightening approach, [addressing] dullness and dark spots so your complexion looks brighter and healthier. It melts into the skin without stickiness, and on damp skin, provides intense moisturisation that lasts for up to 24 hours. Applying it twice daily will let you see results after 12 weeks of continuous use.
What sets it apart from other brightening serums?
We use m-Tranexamic acid in the formula, which effectively suppresses the skin’s ability to form blemishes and dark spots. Meanwhile, the 4MSK works on melanocytes to break down the causes of spots and eliminate persisting spots by promoting the elimination of retained melanin.
With these brightening ingredients, we developed a formulation that give users multi-level brightening results that target not only dark spots but also dullness.

What is your recommended routine when using the serum?
I recommend applying it twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. It should be applied after balancing your skin with a skin conditioning lotion but before applying moisturiser.
What do you personally use to keep your skin healthy?
My skincare routine obviously consists of Clé de Peau Beauté products. But I always ensure that suncare and brightening products are an absolute must in my regimen. Also, because my skin tends to dry out after taking a bath, I always apply a moisturising lotion. For my inner health, I take multivitamin supplements, especially vitamin B and C to keep my skin healthy.

What’s a common skincare mistake you have observed?
One of the most common myths I see people perpetuate is that suncare is only necessary when the UV rays are strong and not an everyday necessity. However, UV rays (be it from the sun or other sources) can be very damaging to the skin and cause inflammation, even when the skin is not directly exposed to UV rays. Therefore, I highly advise people to wear sunscreen.
What’s an area do you see people neglect in their skincare?
Our research has found that many tend to neglect the care of their neck or décolletage. These areas are often exposed to UV rays, and [where] signs of ageing are easily noticeable. Therefore, [equal care should be taken] for the neck as they do for their faces.
At what age should you start using intensive skincare products?
[As skin types and goals vary], there is no specific age to start using certain products. It’s important to [identify] what your skin goals are and use the right products to achieve them.
